Removing and installing activated charcoal filter and fuel system diagnostic pump V144 — VW
Removing and installing activated charcoal filter and fuel system diagnostic pump V144 on VW: 11 steps, engines BPR, BPS.
On the BPR and BPS petrol engines in platforms 1C1 and 1Y7, the activated charcoal filter and the fuel system diagnostic pump V144 sit together behind the rear right wheel arch, so the job starts with the rear right wheel housing liner. With the liner out you disconnect the two breather lines, pull the connector off V144 and take off its vacuum line. The rear right side repeater has to come out as well, because one set of bolts is reached through that opening. The filter and pump then come out as one unit and are split on the bench. What decides the job is labelling the breather and vacuum lines before they come off, since swapped lines give evaporative system faults rather than an obvious leak.
🧭 Before you start
Access is from the rear right wheel arch after the housing liner and side repeater are removed. Disconnect both breather lines, the V144 connector and the vacuum line, then release the mounting bolts and lift the charcoal filter out together with the pump. On the bench, separate the connecting hose and remove the three bolts holding V144 to the filter. Refit in reverse and confirm every line is pushed fully home.
Fits: platform codes 1C1, 1Y7
Don't miss
- Mark breather lines (1) and (2) and the vacuum line before removal; mixed-up lines cause evaporative system faults.
- The side repeater must come out to reach the filter bolts; refit it and check it works.
- Steel and plastic tank versions are handled the same way despite the diagram showing the metal tank.
- Separate the connecting hose from V144 before removing the three bolts holding the pump to the filter.
- After refitting, a leak test of the evaporative system through diagnosis is good general practice to confirm the seal.

Who makes these pages, and how
TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
