Draining and filling with coolant: VW (BPR, BPS)
Step-by-step draining and filling with coolant for the VW (BPR/BPS): 14 steps. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.
Workshop procedure for VW — the exact step sequence and torque figures, straight from real workshop data.
🧭 Before you start
- Opens: coolant
- Special tools named: VAS 6096
Don't miss
- Only fresh tap water must be used for mixing. Well water does not have the required quality to ensure the coolant's function. — Screw drain plug into radiator (arrow).
- Slowly fill coolant to upper marking of hatched area (arrow) on expansion tank.
📋 Procedure
- ⚠ Steam may escape when expansion tank is opened. Wear eye protection and protective clothing to avoid eye injuries and scalding. Cover cap with cloth and open carefully. — Open cap for expansion tank.
- Remove noise insulation General body repairs, exterior 50. Body - front; Assembly overview - noise insulation.
- Place drip tray V.A.G 1306 or drip tray for workshop hoist VAS 6208 underneath
- To drain coolant from radiator, open drain plug (arrow). [Note: In vehicles as of model year 2008, only G 12 plus-plus according to "“TL VW 774 G”" may be used as coolant additive. For vehicles up to and including model year 2007 coolant additive G 12 plus according to "“TL VW 774 F”" and G 12 plus-plus according to "“TL VW 774 G”" can be used. The coolant additive G 12 plus-plus can be mixed with the previous coolant additive G 12 plus. Identification: both are coloured purple. Coolant additives marked "“conforming to TL VW 774 G”" or "“conforming to TL VW 774 F”" prevent frost and corrosion damage, scaling and also raise boiling point of coolant. Therefore, the cooling system must be filled all year round with frost and corrosion protection additives. Because of its higher boiling point, the coolant improves engine reliability under heavy loads, particularly in countries with tropical climates. Frost protection must be assured to about -25 °C (in countries with arctic climates: to about -35 °C).The coolant concentration must not be reduced by adding water, even in warmer seasons and in warmer countries. The coolant additive concentration must be at least 40 %.If, for climatic reasons, greater frost protection is required, the amount of coolant additive can be increased but only up to 60 % (frost protection to about -40 °C). Otherwise frost protection and cooling effectiveness are reduced again. The refractometer T10007 is recommended for determining the current anti-freeze density. If radiator, heat exchanger, cylinder head or cylinder head gasket is renewed, do not reuse old coolant.]

- Install noise insulation General body repairs, exterior 50. Body - front; Assembly overview - noise insulation.
- Screw adapter for cooling system tester V.A.G 1274/8 onto expansion tank.
- Fill coolant circuit using cooling system charge unit VAS 6096Operating instructions for cooling system charge unit VAS 6096.
- Slowly fill coolant to upper marking of hatched area (arrow) on expansion tank.
- Fit expansion tank cap.
- Switch off heater and air conditioner.
- Start engine and maintain an engine speed of about 2,000 rpm for approx. 3 minutes.
- Run engine until radiator fan cuts in.
- ⚠ Steam may escape when expansion tank is opened. Wear eye protection and protective clothing to avoid eye injuries and scalding. Cover cap with cloth and open carefully. — Check coolant level and top-up if necessary.

Who makes these pages, and how
TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
Seen a figure that does not match your manual? Write to us — we correct it and note when. support@torqfix.com
