Timing belt replacement: Peugeot 106 >1996 (TUD5)
Step-by-step timing belt replacement for the Peugeot 106 >1996 (TUD5): 83 steps. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.
Timing belt replacement on the Peugeot 106 1.5 D with the TUD5 diesel (VJY and VJZ versions) from 1996 is a pinned-engine job with a belt that is tensioned by gauge, not by feel. With the battery disconnected and the camshaft and injection pump locked with pins, their gearwheel bolts are slackened so the wheels turn without play. The belt goes on anti-clockwise from the crankshaft gearwheel, with the gearwheels nudged anti-clockwise to engage it. Tension is set with the gauge and the special tool, using different readings for new and used belts, the gearwheel bolts are tightened mid-slot, and the engine turned two revolutions before tension and pinning are rechecked. Locking pins that slide in cleanly at the end are the proof.
🧭 Before you start
Disconnect the battery, lock the camshaft and injection pump, remove the covers and slacken the gearwheel bolts. Fit the belt anti-clockwise from the crankshaft, set the tension with the gauge and special tool and tighten the tensioner and gearwheel bolts. Turn the crankshaft two turns, re-pin, slacken and repeat the tension setting, then check the final reading and the timing pins. Refit the covers, pulley, drive belt, splash guard and wheel.
Fits: platform codes 1.5, D
- Timing position: the crankshaft or camshaft is set and locked during this job
- Special tools named: locking pin
Don't miss
- Use the new-belt or used-belt tension reading as appropriate; they differ.
- Check the gearwheel bolts sit in the middle of their slots before final tightening.
- Avoid bending, twisting or pulling the belt while handling it.
- Turn the crankshaft clockwise only, two full turns, before rechecking tension and timing.
- Timing is correct only when all locking pins fit freely.

📋 Procedure
Preparation and removal
- Disconnect the battery
- Timing cover
- Camshaft gearwheel
- Camshaft locking pin:
- Lock the camshaft and injection pump with special locking pins
Installation and checks
- Loosen the camshaft and injection pump gearwheels. Check that they rotate without play
- Fit the timing belt anti-clockwise, starting at the crankshaft gearwheel
- Note the following when fitting the belt:
- Turn the camshaft and injection pump gearwheels slightly anti-clockwise to engage the timing belt on the gearwheel
- Note: Avoid bending, torsion or traction
- Fit the tension gauge
- Fit the special tool
- Turn the tensioner anti-clockwise until the special tool reads:
- New belt:
- Used belt:
- Hold the tensioner pulley in this position
- Tighten the tensioner
- Remove the tension gauge
- Check that the camshaft and injection pump gearwheel bolts are in the middle of their slots
- Repeat the procedure if required
- Tighten the camshaft and injection pump gearwheel bolts
- Remove all the locking pins
- Turn the crankshaft clockwise 2 rotations
- Fit the tension gauge
- Loosen the camshaft gearwheel and injection pump gearwheel
- Loosen the tensioner
- Turn the tensioner anti-clockwise until the special tool reads:
- New belt:
- Used belt:
- Hold the tensioner pulley in this position
- Tighten the tensioner
- Tighten the camshaft and injection pump gearwheel bolts
- Remove the tension gauge
- Refit the tension gauge
- The tension is set if the tension gauge indicates a value between:
- New belt:
- Used belt:
- Remove the tension gauge
- Remove the locking pins
- Turn the crankshaft clockwise 2 rotations
- Fit the locking pins to check the timing
- The timing is set when the locking bolt(s) fit correctly
- Refit the timing belt covers
- Refit the crankshaft pulley
- Fit the ancillary drive belt
- Refit the front right splash guard
- Refit the front right wheel
- Reconnect the battery

Who makes these pages, and how
TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
