Removing and installing exhaust gas recirculation control motor V338 with exhaust gas recirculation potentiometer G212 — AUDI

Removing and installing exhaust gas recirculation control motor V338 with exhaust gas recirculation potentiometer G212 on Audi: 14 steps, engines CBAA.

On the Audi A3 (8P, 2003–2012) with the engine codes listed below, the EGR control motor V338 and its potentiometer G212 come off as one unit, but the throttle valve module J338 is in the way. After the engine cover and noise insulation, the air hose and air pipe are released, the pipe left loosely in place, and J338 is unbolted and set aside. That opens up the EGR motor: unplug it, remove its two bolts and lift it off. Use a new O-ring on refitting. The step people forget is adaption after renewal: run the engine for one minute, switch it off and leave the ignition off for five minutes so the control unit learns the new motor's positions.

14 steps 4 engine codes

🧭 Before you start

Remove the engine cover and noise insulation, release the air hose and loosen the air pipe at the throttle valve module. Unbolt J338, unplug V338 and remove its bolts. Fit the new motor with a new O-ring, refit J338, air pipe, air hose and noise insulation, then complete the adaption run.

Fits: Audi A3 (8P, 2003–2012)

  • Renewed: o-ring

Don't miss

  • Renew the O-ring on the EGR control motor.
  • Loosen the air pipe at J338 but leave it in position; no need to remove it fully.
  • After renewal, run the engine one minute, then ignition off for five minutes for adaption.
  • Refit the air hose plug-in connector until it locks; a loose hose gives boost leaks.
  • Read the fault memory afterwards and clear old EGR faults, as general practice.

Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
