Removing and installing trim — VW
Removing and installing trim on VW: 23 steps, 1 torque figure. What to remove, what to tighten and to how many Nm, what to check after.
Workshop procedure for VW — the exact step sequence and torque figures, straight from real workshop data.
🧭 Before you start
Fits: platform codes 5C7, 5C1
- Special tools named: V.A.G 1351/1
Don't miss
- Also make a mark at distance (b) = 20 mm starting from windscreen.
- Since 3 adhesive beads are applied to the rear roof cross member, increased resistance will be encountered here.Guide the cutting wire close enough to the trim, in order not to damage the adjacent components.
- There are 2 adhesive beads on the roof cross member and increased resistance will be encountered here.
- The installation must be carried out with the glass panel closed. The position of the adhesive beads (1) is stamped in the trim (2).
- Do not cut back remaining adhesive bead on sliding/tilting roof frame until shortly before installation.
🔩 Torque settings
Values can differ between engine variants — check the code stamped on your block.
| Torque | Fastener / step |
|---|---|
| 2.5 Nm (1.8 lb-ft) | Tighten bolts (4 |
ℹ️ Always cross-check the exact figure against your vehicle's factory manual before final tightening — a wrong torque can damage the engine. These values are extracted from workshop data and may not cover every variant or revision.
📋 Procedure
- Remove glass panel for panorama sliding/tilting glass roof .
- Remove wind deflector .
- Bond windscreen seal to windscreen and press it on firmly.
- ⚠ Mask the body surfaces adjoining to the panoramic tilting/sliding glass sunroof trim with adhesive tape to prevent damage to the paintwork. — Starting from roof side member, make a mark at distance (a) = 20 mm on left and right sides of trim along its entire length.
- Also make a mark at distance (b) = 20 mm starting from windscreen.
- ⚠ Due to the small clearance between the trim and the sliding sunroof frame, a depth stop needs to be installed and set to 5 mm. — Cut off trim strips along markings by means of electric cutterV.A.G 1561A(1) and saw blade, 80 mm in diameterV.A.G 1561/26(2).
- Thread cutting wire (2) on front-left between trim (1) and sliding sunroof frame, and attach ends of cutting wire to two pull handles V.A.G 1351/1(3).
- Cut through adhesive beads at side and rear with "“sawing”" motions (arrow a). [Note: Since 3 adhesive beads are applied to the rear roof cross member, increased resistance will be encountered here.Guide the cutting wire close enough to the trim, in order not to damage the adjacent components.]
- Thread cutting wire on front right between trim and sliding sunroof frame and attach ends of cutting wire to two pull handles V.A.G 1351/1.
- Cut through adhesive bead at side with "“sawing”" motions (arrow b).
- Then, cut through adhesive beads on front roof cross member (arrow c) in the same way and remove trim from sliding sunroof frame. [Note: There are 2 adhesive beads on the roof cross member and increased resistance will be encountered here.] [Note: To ensure that a sufficient amount of assembly adhesive is available when needed, heat 2 cartridges.Assembly adhesive should be applied with assistance of a second mechanic.]
- ⚠ Keep bonding surfaces of the sliding sunroof frame free of dirt and grease.Do not cut back bonding surface on sliding sunroof frame until shortly before installation.Do not prime bonding surface on sliding sunroof frame, and do not treat it with a cleaning solution. — Install wind deflector .
- Install glass panel for panorama sliding/tilting glass roof . [Note: The installation must be carried out with the glass panel closed. The position of the adhesive beads (1) is stamped in the trim (2).]
- Check body panel gaps/shut lines for rear lid 00Body panel gaps/shut lines.
- If the body panel gaps/shut lines are not correct, adjust rear lid .
- Do not cut back remaining adhesive bead on sliding/tilting roof frame until shortly before installation.

Who makes these pages, and how
TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
