Removing and installing operating and display unit — VW

Removing and installing operating and display unit on VW: 9 steps, 4 torque figures. What to remove, what to tighten and to how many Nm, what to check.

The heater operating and display unit sits in the centre of the dash, on the platform code listed below, and is held by a trim, a couple of bolts and the radio or centre trim in front of it. The fresh/recirculated air slide control is pulled off, the trim unclipped with removal wedge 3409, and the bolts at 1.5 Nm removed. Depending on equipment, the radio or centre trim comes out next. The unit is then unhooked from its mountings, pulled forwards, its connectors unplugged, and the flexible shafts for the defroster, air distribution and temperature flaps and the fresh/recirculated air cable detached. Refitting is the reverse, with one point that decides whether it works: the flap actuators and the rotary knobs must be set correctly relative to each other when the flexible shafts are connected, or the system malfunctions.

🧭 Before you start

Remove the slide control, unclip the trim and remove the bolts, then the radio or centre trim depending on equipment. Unhook the unit, pull it forwards, unplug it and detach the flexible shafts and flap cable. Refit in reverse, setting the actuators and knobs in matching positions before connecting the shafts, and tighten the bolts to 1.5 Nm.

Fits: platform code 121

Don't miss

  • Set the flap actuators and rotary knobs in matching positions before connecting the flexible shafts.
  • Use removal wedge 3409 on the marked clip points to avoid cracking the trim.
  • Bolts (1) take 1.5 Nm.
  • Depending on equipment, the radio or centre trim must come out before the unit can be unhooked.

📋 Procedure

  1. Remove slide control for fresh air/recirculated air (1) in (direction of arrow).
  2. Unclip trim (1) at marked points (arrows) using removal wedge3409 and remove trim (1).

  1. Disconnect connectors from operating and display unit (1).
  2. Detach flexible shafts (1) for defroster and air distribution flap and temperature flap as well as fresh air/recirculated air flap cable from operating and display unit (2).
  3. Remove operating and display unit. [Note: The flexible shaft connexion (3) is referred to as "“terminal”".]
  4. Installation is carried out in the reverse order. When installing, note the following: [Note: When the flexible shafts are installed, the actuators and rotary knobs on the heated air and fresh air controls must be positioned correctly relative to each other, or the system will malfunction.]

Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
