Removing and installing fuel pump control unit J538 — VW

Removing and installing fuel pump control unit J538 on VW: 19 steps, engines BZB, CAVA, CAVD, CAWA. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.

The fuel pump control unit J538 on the Golf VII, Variant and Sportsvan (5G1, BA5, AM1) sits on the fuel tank under the rear seat, so this is interior work. Ignition off, front seats forward, rear seat out; then the carpet cover over the tank flange is peeled back at its parting line just far enough to fold up, so it goes back in the same place. The flange cover is unclipped with removal wedge 3409, the grommet pushed down off it and the cover slid back along the harness. The unit is held by a tab reached with a finger between the floor panel and the tank; press it up, draw the unit out by its harness and unplug it. The decider is pulling on the connector and the refitted unit to prove both are locked.

🧭 Before you start

Access work first: ignition off, front seats fully forward, right rear seat and bench removed, carpet cover folded up at its parting line. Then the flange cover comes off with removal wedge 3409, the sealing grommet and cover are moved back along the harness, the retaining tab is pressed up from between floor panel and tank and the unit is drawn out by its harness and unplugged. On refitting, the harness is connected and pull-tested, the unit pushed into its bracket on the tank until it clicks and pull-tested again, then covers and seats go back.

Fits: VW Golf VII Variant (BA), VW Golf Sportsvan (AM1, 2014–2020), VW Golf VII (5G, 2012–2020)

Don't miss

  • Detach the carpet cover only partly, at the parting line; fully removed it will not go back in position.
  • Unclip the flange cover at its retaining tabs with removal wedge 3409.
  • The retaining tab (arrow A) is pressed up by hand from between the floor panel and the tank.
  • Pull the unit out by the wiring harness in direction B while the tab is held up.
  • After connecting, pull on the connector; after fitting, pull on the unit. Both must hold, and the unit must click in.

Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
