Removing and installing fuel pump control unit J538 (Tiguan) — VW
Removing and installing fuel pump control unit J538 (Tiguan) on VW: 11 steps, engines BWK, CAXA, CMSB.
Fuel pump control unit J538 on the Tiguan (5N1, 2007–2016) with the BWK, CAXA and CMSB engines sits in a bracket next to the fuel delivery unit, under the right-hand access cover, and it is changed more often for a poor connector than for a dead module. The factory procedure makes that point itself: before anything comes apart, the 5-pin connector is pulled on without pressing the catch to prove it is latched, because a half-seated plug produces exactly the faults the control unit gets blamed for. The unit is not bolted. A screwdriver goes into the recess in the bracket directly above the plug, is swivelled and pressed down, and the control unit is drawn out of the bracket by its plug. Refitting is the same in reverse, with the connector pushed home and tested by pulling before the unit is slid back until it engages.
🧭 Before you start
Access is through the right-hand cover on the fuel delivery unit. The connector is checked for secure engagement, unplugged, and its contacts inspected; the control unit is then released from its bracket with a screwdriver in the recess above the plug and pulled out by the plug. On the new or refitted unit the connector is pushed on and checked by pulling, and the unit is slid into the bracket until it engages.
Fits: VW Tiguan I (5N, 2007–2016)
Don't miss
- Pull the 5-pin connector without pressing the catch first; a loose plug is the usual fault.
- Inspect the contacts on both plug and fuel delivery unit for damage before fitting a new unit.
- Screwdriver goes in the bracket recess directly above the plug; press down while pulling the unit out.
- Check the connector by pulling after refitting; it must stay put without the catch pressed.
- Slide the control unit into the bracket until it engages.

Who makes these pages, and how
TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
