Installing 4/2-way valve with thermostat: VW Jetta VI / Golf V / Jetta 2.0 TDI (CFFB, CFHB, CFHC, CLCA, …)

Step-by-step installing 4/2-way valve with thermostat for the VW Jetta VI / Golf V / Jetta 2.0 TDI: 29 steps, 2 torque figures.

This covers refitting the 4/2-way coolant valve with its thermostat on the common-rail diesels coded CFFB, CFHB, CFHC, CLCA and CLCB, as fitted to the Golf V/Jetta (1K2) and to the later platform codes 162, 163 and AJ5. The valve connection goes into the cylinder block on a fresh O-ring, then the dipstick tube, alternator, both charge air pipes, coolant pipes and hoses, wiring brackets, battery carrier and air filter housing all go back in roughly the reverse of how they came out. Two things decide the result: the O-ring must be moistened with coolant and the connection worked in with slight rotary motions so the seal is not rolled or cut, and every coolant hose and union (A) to (D) must be correctly paired before the system is refilled.

🧭 Before you start

Seat the valve connection on a new O-ring and bolt it to the block, then refit the coolant hoses on unions A, B and D. Next come the dipstick tube, alternator, right air pipe with the G31/G42 sender connector, the front coolant pipe and the left air pipe with its wiring and vacuum hoses. Finish with the crankcase breather hose, battery carrier, battery, air filter housing and engine cover, then replenish the coolant.

Fits: VW Jetta VI (16, 2010–2018), VW Golf V / Jetta (1K, 2003–2009); platform code AJ5

Don't miss

  • Use a new O-ring on the valve connection, moistened with coolant, and push it in with slight rotary motions.
  • Valve securing bolts (3) go to 15 Nm with a T-bar and 10 mm socket.
  • Fit the coolant pipe to valve connection (C) and hoses to unions (A), (B) and (D) before refilling.
  • Refit the charge pressure/intake air temperature sender connector on the right air pipe; a missed plug sets faults straight away.
  • Reconnect the vacuum hoses and crankcase breather hose before the air filter housing hides them.
  • General practice: bleed the cooling system properly and recheck the level once the engine has warmed up and cooled.

📋 Procedure

  1. Moisten new O-ring (1) with coolant.
  2. Insert connection (2) of 4/2-way valve with O-ring (1) into cylinder block with slight rotary motions.
  3. Tighten securing bolts (3) using T-bar and 10 mm socket3185. Specified torque: 15 Nm — 15 Nm (11 lb-ft)
  4. Fit coolant hoses on unions (A), (B) and (D).
  5. Insert dipstick tube downwards into cylinder block.

Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
