Timing belt replacement: Engines: AEG, AVH, AZG, APK, AQY, BEJ, BER, BEV, BHP — VW
Timing belt replacement — Engines: AEG, AVH, AZG, APK, AQY, BEJ, BER, BEV, BHP on VW: 17 steps, 2 torque figures.
Workshop procedure for VW — the exact step sequence and torque figures, straight from real workshop data.
🧭 Before you start
- Timing position: the crankshaft or camshaft is set and locked during this job
- Special tools named: 3415
Don't miss
- Seal the intake ports in the intake manifold lower part with a clean cloth.
- Set camshaft pulley to TDC No. 1 cylinder by turning the crankshaft. 1. Mark on camshaft pulley must align with arrow on toothed belt guard.
- Take camshaft pulley off. When loosening camshaft pulley bolt counterhold with 3415.
- When installing the camshaft No. 1 cylinder cams must point upwards. When installing bearing caps observe centre offset of holes, before installing , fit bearing caps and determine installation position.
- When turning the camshaft the crankshaft must not be at TDC. Danger of damage to valves/piston crown.
🔩 Torque settings
Values can differ between engine variants — check the code stamped on your block.
| Torque | Fastener / step |
|---|---|
| 20 Nm (15 lb-ft) | Install bearing caps 3, 1 and 5 and also tighten |
| 20 Nm (15 lb-ft) | Tighten bearing caps 2 and 4, using alternate and diagonal sequence |
ℹ️ Always cross-check the exact figure against your vehicle's factory manual before final tightening — a wrong torque can damage the engine. These values are extracted from workshop data and may not cover every variant or revision.
📋 Procedure
- Remove engine cover.
- Remove intake manifold upper part . [Note: Seal the intake ports in the intake manifold lower part with a clean cloth.]
- Remove toothed belt guard upper part.
- Set camshaft pulley to TDC No. 1 cylinder by turning the crankshaft. 1. Mark on camshaft pulley must align with arrow on toothed belt guard.
- Loosen tensioning roller and remove toothed belt from camshaft pulley.
- Turn crankshaft back slightly.
- Take camshaft pulley off. When loosening camshaft pulley bolt counterhold with 3415.
- Remove woodruff key from camshaft.
- Remove cylinder head cover.
- First remove bearing caps 5, 1 and 3. Tighten bearing caps 2 and 4 alternately and diagonally. [Note: When installing the camshaft No. 1 cylinder cams must point upwards. When installing bearing caps observe centre offset of holes, before installing , fit bearing caps and determine installation position.]
- Oil the camshaft contact surfaces.
- Fit camshaft in place.
- Tighten bearing caps 2 and 4, using alternate and diagonal sequence, to 20 Nm. — 20 Nm (15 lb-ft)
- Lightly coat bearing cap 1 contact surfaces with AMV 174 004 01.
- Install bearing caps 3, 1 and 5 and also tighten to 20 Nm. — 20 Nm (15 lb-ft)
- Install woodruff in camshaft.
- Install camshaft pulley. When tightening camshaft pulley bolt counterhold with 3415. [Note: When turning the camshaft the crankshaft must not be at TDC. Danger of damage to valves/piston crown.] [Note: After installing new bucket tappets the engine must not be started for approx. 30 minutes. Hydraulic compensation elements must settle (otherwise valves will strike pistons).]

Who makes these pages, and how
TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
