Generator (Alternator) C for 1.6L (AKL), 1.8L (AGU, AUQ, AWP, AWW) and 2.0L (CFEA, CBPA, APK, AEG, AVH, BEJ, BER, BHP, BEV) engines - remove and install — VW

Generator (Alternator) C for 1.6L (AKL), 1.8L (AGU, AUQ, AWP, AWW) and 2.0L (CFEA, CBPA, APK, AEG, AVH, BEJ, BER, BHP, BEV) engines - remove and install.

Changing the alternator on the platform codes listed below, with the 1.6 AKL, 1.8 AGU, AUQ, AWP, AWW and 2.0 CFEA, CBPA, APK, AEG, AVH, BEJ, BER, BHP or BEV engines, is a top-and-bottom job of moderate length. After switching everything off and disconnecting the battery, the engine cover and lower noise insulation come off, along with the right-hand engine-bay insulation. The poly V-belt is marked for running direction, the tensioner is moved to relieve tension and locked with a pin, and the belt is removed. Then the connector and B+ terminal are released, the fastening screws undone and the cable clip freed so the unit can come out. On turbo engines the throttle valve control unit has to come off first for clearance. Correct belt routing on refit is the main thing.

16 steps

🧭 Before you start

Turn everything off, disconnect the battery and remove the engine cover and noise insulation. Mark the belt direction, lever the tensioner and lock it with a pin, then remove the poly V-belt. Disconnect the connector and B+ cable, undo the mounting screws and cable clip, and remove the alternator. On refit, route the belt on the crankshaft pulley first and the tensioning pulley last, tighten the mountings and run the engine to check the belt.

Fits: platform codes 9B1, 9B3

  • Special tools named: T10060

Don't miss

  • Mark the spinning direction of the poly V-belt before removing it.
  • Lock the tensioner with the pin while the belt is off.
  • On turbo engines, remove the throttle valve control unit first for access.
  • Fit the belt to the crankshaft pulley first and the tensioning pulley last, following the belt run.
  • Start the engine afterwards and check the belt runs true.

📋 Procedure

  1. Turn off the ignition, all the electrical devices, and remove the key from ignition.
  2. Disconnect the BatteryA .
  3. Remove the engine cover (if necessary) Engine24Supply system - fuel injection. [Note: For turbo engines, in order to facilitate removal of the Generator (Alternator)C it is necessary to remove the Accelerator butterfly valve control unit J338Engine24Supply system - fuel injection]
  4. Remove the lower engine noise insulation General body repairs, exterior50Body - front part.
  5. Remove the noise insulation (right side) from the engine compartment by releasing the hex nut.

  1. Disengage the fastening clips (arrows) and remove the noise insulation.
  2. Mark spinning direction of the Poly-V belt.
  3. Move the tensioning element towards the (arrow) to relieve the Poly-V belt tension.
  4. Lock the tensioning element with the Pin T10060.
  5. Remove the Poly-V belt.
  6. Disengage connector (1) and release the terminal from the B+ cable(2) of the Generator (Alternator)C.
  7. Loosen the fastening screws (arrows) from the Generator (Alternator)C.
  8. Loosen the fastening clip (arrow) for the Generator (Alternator)Ccables.
  9. Remove the Generator (Alternator)C.
  10. First, place Poly-V belt on the crankshaft pulley, and then on the tensioning pulley, as indicated on the belt run .
  11. Tighten the fastening nuts to the specified torque. [Note: After finishing the procedure, start the engine and check the belt motion.]

Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
