Removing and installing track rod - Audi A1 quattro — AUDI

Removing and installing track rod - Audi A1 quattro on Audi: 15 steps. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.

On the Audi A1 quattro (8X, 2010–2018) the rear track rod links the axle to the subframe, and it shares space with the anti-roll bar. Before anything is undone, the distance from wheel centre to the lower edge of the wheel housing is measured and written down, because the bolts are only tightened later with the axle in its unladen position. With the wheel off, the coupling rod is pulled out of the anti-roll bar, the anti-roll bar clamp bolts are undone and the track rod bolts come out, one of them towards the rear. The new rod goes in with its open side facing down and the bolts finger-tight. Getting the ride height right on final tightening, and the subframe nut renewed, decides whether the bushes last.

15 steps

🧭 Before you start

Measure and note wheel-centre-to-arch height, remove the wheel, then free the coupling rod and anti-roll bar clamp. Remove the track rod nuts and bolts and take it out. Fit the new rod open side down, hand-tighten, then bring the axle to the unladen position and tighten everything: subframe bolt with a new nut, outer bolt, clamp and coupling rod. Check whether wheel alignment is needed.

Fits: Audi A1 (8X, 2010–2018)

Don't miss

  • Measure wheel centre to wheel housing edge before starting; you need it for the unladen position.
  • Fit the track rod with its open side facing downwards.
  • Only tighten the bolts with the axle in the unladen position, not hanging.
  • Use a new nut where the track rod bolts to the subframe.
  • Check the overview table to see if a wheel alignment check is required afterwards.

Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
