Removing and installing refrigerant line with internal heat exchanger on Audi: 23 steps. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.

Workshop procedure for AUDI — the exact step sequence and torque figures, straight from real workshop data.

23 steps

🧭 Before you start

Fits: Audi R8 (4S, 2015–)

  • Opens: refrigerant (A/C)
  • Renewed: o-rings
  • Also covered elsewhere: Electronic parts catalogue

Don't miss

  • Mark routing of refrigerant line (1).
  • Check routing and attachment of refrigerant lines .

📋 Procedure

  1. ⚠ Danger from escaping pressurised refrigerant.Frostbite on skin and other parts of the body.Extract the refrigerant and then immediately open up the refrigerant circuit.Extract the refrigerant again if more than 10 minutes have passed since the initial extraction and the refrigerant circuit has not been opened up. Renewed evaporation leads to the build-up of pressure in the refrigerant circuit. — Switch off ignition.
  2. Remove luggage compartment liner (with cowl panel trim) General body repairs, interior70Luggage compartment trim panels; Overview of fitting locations - luggage compartment trim panels.
  3. Discharge refrigerant circuit Air conditioner with refrigerant R134a87Refrigerant circuit (Air conditioner with refrigerant R134a; Refrigerant circuit; Working with the air conditioner service station).
  4. Mark routing of refrigerant line (1).
  5. Detach refrigerant line (1) with internal heat exchanger from expansion valve (3)Removing and installing expansion valve.

  2. Disconnect refrigerant line at joint (4)Unfastening and assembling connection points in refrigerant lines.
  3. Detach refrigerant line from receiver (2)Removing and installing receiver with dryer.
  4. Unthread refrigerant line with internal heat exchanger (1) and remove.
  5. Seal off open lines and connections with clean plugs from engine bung setVAS 6122.
  6. Renew O-rings; for correct version, refer to Electronic parts catalogue.
  7. Clean connections at refrigerant line with internal heat exchanger (1), at receiver (2), at expansion valve (3) and at joint (4) and check for damage. [Note: Lubricate O-rings lightly with refrigerant oil before fitting Refrigerant circuit seals.Make sure O-rings are seated correctly at connections.Observe the different tightening torques of the bolts. Even minor damage to the connections (e.g. a small scratch) could cause leakage.Ensure absolute cleanliness when working (even the slightest contamination, e.g. a single hair at the connections, could cause leakage).]
  8. Insert O-rings (3) in groove at respective connection.
  9. If fitted, check that dowel pin (4) is not damaged and is seated correctly.
  10. Check guide ring (2) (if fitted) at refrigerant line connection for damage.
  11. Install refrigerant line with internal heat exchanger (1) in accordance with previously attached markings and insert in respective connections of various components.
  12. Assemble refrigerant line at joint (B, C).
  13. Tighten bolts. [Note: Check routing and attachment of refrigerant lines .]
  14. Re-install removed components in reverse order.
  15. Evacuate and charge refrigerant circuit Air conditioner with refrigerant R134a87Refrigerant circuit (Air conditioner with refrigerant R134a; Refrigerant circuit; Working with the air conditioner service station).
  16. Start up air conditioner after charging refrigerant circuit . [Note: Also observe notes on starting up air conditioner after charging Air conditioner with refrigerant R134a87General notes on air conditioning systems. Before using air conditioner after system has been re-charged.]
  17. Interrogate the event memory of E87 and erase any faults displayed in "“Guided Fault Finding”" mode.
  18. As a final step, check operation of heater and air conditioner.

Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
