Checking ATF level — AUDI
Checking ATF level on Audi: 35 steps, 5 torque figures. What to remove, what to tighten and to how many Nm, what to check after.
Workshop procedure for AUDI — the exact step sequence and torque figures, straight from real workshop data.
🧭 Before you start
Fits: VW Transporter T5 (7H)
- Renewed: seal, protective cap
Don't miss
- ATF filling unit must be clean. The ATF oil is not allowed to be mixed with other ATF oils!
- The ATF temperature should not be warmer than approx. 30 °C at the start of the test.
- Only a small amount of ATF should come out of the inspection hole when the engine is running.Always renew seal on sealing plug (arrow 1).
- Lever off protective cap with screwdriver. Locking mechanism of protective cap is irreparably damaged by doing this; always renew protective cap.
- Always renew seal on sealing plug (arrow 1).
🔩 Torque settings
Values can differ between engine variants — check the code stamped on your block.
| Torque | Fastener / step |
|---|---|
| 15 Nm (11 lb-ft) | Fit new oil seal to plug (arrow 1) and tighten |
| 8 Nm (5.9 lb-ft) | Fit new seal (arrow) on ATF inspection plug and tighten |
| 8 Nm (5.9 lb-ft) | Screw plug (1) back in and tighten |
| 80 Nm (59 lb-ft) | Fit new seal (arrow) on ATF inspection plug and tighten |
| 9 Nm (6.6 lb-ft) | Fit new seal (arrow) on ATF inspection plug and tighten |
ℹ️ Always cross-check the exact figure against your vehicle's factory manual before final tightening — a wrong torque can damage the engine. These values are extracted from workshop data and may not cover every variant or revision.
📋 Procedure
- ⚠ Wear safety goggles. — Position vehicle over inspection pit or on 4-pillar hoist so that it stands level.
- Remove noise insulation below engine.
- Remove bolts (1) and set ATF cooler (2) to the side on the left.
- Remove bolts (arrows) and remove ATF cooler bracket from subframe.
- Position drip tray for workshop hoistVAS 6208 under vehicle.
- Fill reservoirV.A.G 1924 with ATF for automatic gearbox 09K. [Note: ATF filling unit must be clean. The ATF oil is not allowed to be mixed with other ATF oils!]
- Attach ATF filling unitV.A.G 1924 to bonnet which is open.
- With ignition switched off, connect to diagnosis connector.
- Select "“Guided functions”" menu item.
- Switch on ignition.
- Select corresponding vehicle.
- Select "“Automatic 6-speed gearbox 09K”" → "“Functions”" → "“Check ATF level”".
- Press → key until ATF temperature is shown on display. [Note: The ATF temperature should not be warmer than approx. 30 °C at the start of the test.]
- Start engine and let it run at idling speed.
- Raise vehicle.
- Bring ATF up to test temperature.
- Once ATF temperature has reached 40 °C, unscrew sealing plug (arrow). [Note: Only a small amount of ATF should come out of the inspection hole when the engine is running.Always renew seal on sealing plug (arrow 1).]
- Tighten sealing plug (arrow 1). This concludes the ATF level check.
- Switch off engine.
- Secure ATF cooler bracket to subframe, and tighten bolts (arrows).
- Attach ATF cooler (2) to bracket. Tighten bolts (1).
- Install noise insulation below engine General body repairs, exterior66Exterior equipment; Noise insulation.
- Lever off protective cap with screwdriver. Locking mechanism of protective cap is irreparably damaged by doing this; always renew protective cap.
- Pull plug off filler pipe.
- Fill ATF using ATF filling unitV.A.G 1924 until ATF emerges at inspection hole. [Note: Always renew seal on sealing plug (arrow 1).]
- ⚠ An ATF level which is too low or too high will impair the function of the gearbox. As a result, take the greatest of care when filling ATF. — Tighten sealing plug (arrow 1). This concludes the ATF level check.
- Switch off engine.
- Push plug onto filler pipe and secure filler pipe with a new protective cap.
- ⚠ Always fit a new protective cap, because it protects the plug. — Install noise insulation below engine General body repairs, exterior66Exterior equipment; Noise insulation.
- Open sealing plug (1).
- With engine running, screw adapter for filling ATFVAS 6262/2 into ATF inspection opening until finger-tight.
- Push adapter for filling oilVAS 6262/A onto adapter for filling ATFVAS 6262/2.
- Fill 1 litre of ATF into gearbox.
- Pull adapter for filling oilVAS 6262/A off quick-release connection. [Note: If ATF now runs out of hole in adapter for filling ATFVAS 6262/2, allow ATF to run out until it is only still dripping. If no ATF runs/drips out of hole in adapter for filling ATFVAS 6262/2, add another litre, and repeat procedure as described.]
- Tighten sealing plug. This concludes the ATF level check.

Who makes these pages, and how
TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
Seen a figure that does not match your manual? Write to us — we correct it and note when. support@torqfix.com
