Wheel balancing on a stationary balancing machine — VW
Wheel balancing on a stationary balancing machine on VW: 14 steps, 2 torque figures. What to remove, what to tighten and to how many Nm, what to check.
Workshop procedure for VW — the exact step sequence and torque figures, straight from real workshop data.
🧭 Before you start
Fits: platform codes 6A1, 6A5
- Special tools named: torque wrench
- Renewed: tyre
Don't miss
- In case of unilateral wear, tyres punctured by braking or strong storms, tread regularity cannot be reached via the balancing procedure. In this case, replace the tyre.
🔩 Torque settings
Values can differ between engine variants — check the code stamped on your block.
| Torque | Fastener / step |
|---|---|
| 30 Nm (22 lb-ft) | First, manually tighten the lower wheel bolt to approximately |
| 30 Nm (22 lb-ft) | Next, tighten the remaining wheel bolts, in a crisscross pattern, to approximately |
ℹ️ Always cross-check the exact figure against your vehicle's factory manual before final tightening — a wrong torque can damage the engine. These values are extracted from workshop data and may not cover every variant or revision.
📋 Procedure
- Clean the track rod, centre, and contact surface of the wheel using, for example, a air brush jet setVAS 6446Volkswagen ServiceNet; Workshop Equipment, catalogue before fastening the wheel to the balancing machine! [Note: It is paramount for the balancing machine to use the proper wheel centring and clamping system. Before initiating activities, please consult the corresponding wheel balancing machine centring systemVolkswagen ServiceNet; Workshop Equipment, catalogue.]
- Place the wheel with the tyre on the balancing machine. [Note: To secure the wheel in place, use the wheel balancing machine centring systemVAS 5271, for example. This allows 100% centring and securing the wheel without damages!Using cone-shaped fastening equipment, it is possible to ensure 100% centring on the balancing machine. With a 0.1 mm centre deviation, an unbalancing of 10 grams is generated on the wheel/tyre.]
- Leave the wheel on the balancing machine.
- Test the course with identification lines on the sidewalls of the tyre around the rim edge.
- Check the tread design throughout the entire wheel/tyre. [Note: In case of unilateral wear, tyres punctured by braking or strong storms, tread regularity cannot be reached via the balancing procedure. In this case, replace the tyre.]
- Check the concentricity of the wheel/tyre. If the wheel and tyre spin in a non-concentric manner, even with no stop marks, the reason may be a vertical or lateral offset.
- Check the wheel and tyre for radial or lateral impacts .
- If the vertical and lateral offsets are within tolerance values, balance the wheel and tyre. [Note: Only use up to 60 grams of weight per wheel. If more weight is required, higher tread regularity can be reached via "matching". Execute the wheel matching process .The balancing machine display must read 0 grams.Alternatively to matching, the vibration control systemVAS 6230 A may be used.]
- Screw the wheel to the vehicle.
- First, manually tighten the lower wheel bolt to approximately 30 Nm. — 30 Nm (22 lb-ft)
- Next, tighten the remaining wheel bolts, in a crisscross pattern, to approximately 30 Nm. This centralizes the wheel over the wheel hub. — 30 Nm (22 lb-ft)
- Place the vehicle over the wheels.
- Next, tighten the wheel bolts on a crisscross pattern to the indicated tightening torque, using a torque wrench.
- After balancing the wheel/tyre, perform a test drive.

Who makes these pages, and how
TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
