Removing and installing storage compartment — VW

Removing and installing storage compartment on VW: 11 steps, 1 torque figure. What to remove, what to tighten and to how many Nm, what to check after.

The storage compartment beneath the front seat on cars with platform codes BA5, BE1 and 5G1 can be removed without taking the seat out of the car. The seat is unbolted and tilted rearwards, the bracket for the seat trim is removed and any items the customer keeps in the drawer are bagged up. The drawer is pulled out, one bolt is removed, the drawer is closed, and the second bolt comes out. The compartment is then lowered at the front of the seat, pulled forwards and lifted from its left and right mountings. On refitting, the bolts take 1.5 Nm, and the one detail worth watching is the retainer for the side trim, which must engage properly in its mounting on the compartment.

🧭 Before you start

Unbolt and tilt the front seat back, remove the seat trim bracket and empty the drawer. Remove the two bolts, lower the compartment at the front, pull it forwards and free it from the mountings on both sides. Refit in reverse with the bolts at 1.5 Nm and the side trim retainer engaged before the seat is bolted down.

Fits: VW Golf VII Variant (BA), VW Golf VII (5G, 2012–2020); platform code BE1

Don't miss

  • Store the customer's belongings from the drawer in a sealed plastic bag.
  • Tilt the seat back only; do not remove it completely.
  • Make sure the side trim retainer engages in its mounting on the compartment.
  • Tighten the compartment bolts to 1.5 Nm and torque the seat bolts to specification, as general practice.

Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
