Removing and installing rear lid hinge — VW
Removing and installing rear lid hinge on VW: 10 steps. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.
Changing a rear lid hinge on the platform codes listed below is done with the lid kept up, without taking the lid itself off. The rear window is cleaned and a suction lifter V.A.G 1344 is fixed to it, then a tensioning strap T10038 runs from the lifter around the roof railing and is tightened to hold the lid. A wedge T10357 goes between lid and metal flange. With the roof end strip removed, the hinge bolts and hexagon nuts are undone and the hinge and washer come away. The new hinge is sealed to the body with 1K adhesive sealant D 469 101 A3 before it is bolted on. Securing the lid properly first is the safety point; the sealant is what keeps water out of the roof afterwards.
🧭 Before you start
Clean the rear window, fix the suction lifter, run the tensioning strap from the lifter around the roof railing and tighten it, and fit the wedge between lid and flange. Remove the roof end strip, the hinge bolts and hexagon nuts, then take off the hinge and washer. Seal the new hinge to the body with 1K adhesive sealant, fit it and refit the roof end strip.
Fits: platform codes 601, 641, 643, 603

Who makes these pages, and how
TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
