Removing and installing lock carrier — VW
Removing and installing lock carrier on VW: 19 steps. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.
The lock carrier on the vehicles with the 5C7 and 5C1 platform codes listed below comes out as one unit with radiator, condenser and charge air cooler attached, so the job needs a second mechanic and a plan for the fluids. Headlights and front bumper cover come off first, then the strut to the headlight mounting plate, bonnet cable, headlight brackets and, where fitted, the charge air hoses. One bolt per side in the longitudinal members is swapped for the guide pins T10093 to keep the carrier located while the remaining bolts come out. Coolant is drained and the refrigerant lines to the condenser are disconnected; the engine must not run while either is open. Going back, align to the body gaps between the wings and check every hose for pinching.
🧭 Before you start
Remove both headlights and the front bumper cover, then the strut, bonnet cable, headlight brackets and, where fitted, the charge air hoses and the foam element on the bumper carrier. Take out the retaining bracket bolts, swap one bolt per side in the longitudinal members for guide pins T10093, remove the remaining bolts, detach the connectors, drain the coolant and disconnect the condenser's refrigerant lines. With the bonnet supported and a second mechanic, unscrew the guide pins and lift the carrier out. Refit on the guide pins, align to the body gaps and make sure no hose or line is pinched.
Fits: platform codes 5C7, 5C1
- Opens: coolant
Don't miss
- Fit guide pins T10093 in place of the first bolt on each side before removing the rest.
- Do not start the engine with the refrigerant or coolant lines disconnected.
- Lift the carrier out with a second mechanic; never hang the condenser or oil cooler from their lines.
- Do not kink the condenser or hydraulic lines.
- Align the carrier to the body gaps between the wings; charge air hoses properly refitted, nothing pinched.

Who makes these pages, and how
TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
