Removing and installing heater coolant shut-off valve N279, vehicles with petrol engine — VW
Removing and installing heater coolant shut-off valve N279, vehicles with petrol engine on VW: 7 steps, 1 torque figure.
The heater coolant shut-off valve N279 on petrol Passat B6 (3C, 2005–2010), Passat CC (357, 2008–2012) and VW CC (358, 2012–2017) sits on the plenum chamber bulkhead and is quick to reach once the engine cover panel is off. The connector is unplugged, the coolant hoses are clamped off with hose clamps up to Ø 25 mm so the system does not have to be drained, and the hoses are pulled from the valve. One securing bolt and the securing nuts, 8 Nm on refit, hold it to the bulkhead. The thing to respect is pressure: with the engine warm the coolant can be above 100 °C and the system is pressurised, so release pressure and let it cool before any hose comes off. Installation is the reverse.
🧭 Before you start
Access is just the engine cover panel. The valve connector is unplugged, the coolant hoses are clamped with hose clamps (up to Ø 25 mm) and pulled off, then the securing bolt and nuts come out and the valve lifts from the plenum chamber bulkhead. Installation is in reverse order with the fasteners at 8 Nm, after which the clamps come off the hoses.
Fits: VW Passat CC (357, 2008–2012), VW Passat B6 (3C, 2005–2010), VW CC (358, 2012–2017)
Don't miss
- Cooling system is pressurised; warm coolant can be above 100 °C, so release pressure first.
- Clamp off both coolant hoses with hose clamps up to Ø 25 mm before disconnecting.
- Unplug the N279 connector before the hoses come off.
- Securing bolt and nuts go to 8 Nm.
- Top up and check the coolant level once the hose clamps are off.

Who makes these pages, and how
TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
