Removing and installing exhaust pipe for auxiliary heater — VW

Removing and installing exhaust pipe for auxiliary heater on VW: 5 steps, 3 torque figures. What to remove, what to tighten and to how many Nm, what to.

This covers the short exhaust pipe of the fuel-burning auxiliary heater on Golf V, Golf VI and Golf VI Cabriolet (platform codes 1K1, 5K1 and 517). It sits under the floor, so the noise insulation comes off first and you need the exhaust cold before you start. Removal is just the nuts and bolts on the pipe brackets. Fitting is where care is needed: this pipe goes in before the rest of the auxiliary heater exhaust, and the drain hole has to end up visible, because it also serves as the installation mark. The small fasteners are tightened to 6 ± 0.6 Nm in the sequence 1, 2, 3 and 4, and bolt (2) gets 23 ± 3.5 Nm, so a low-range torque wrench is needed.

5 steps 3 torque figures

🧭 Before you start

Remove the noise insulation, let the exhaust cool and undo the nuts and bolts holding the pipe. On refitting, install this pipe first, check the drain hole is visible, then tighten the fasteners in the given order to the listed torques and refit the noise insulation.

Fits: VW Golf V / Jetta (1K, 2003–2009), VW Golf VI (5K, 2008–2013), VW Golf Cabriolet (517, 2011–2016)

Don't miss

  • The drain hole must be visible after fitting; it is also the installation marking.
  • Tighten bolts and nuts to 6 ± 0.6 Nm in sequence 1, 2, 3 and 4.
  • Bolt (2) takes 23 ± 3.5 Nm, a different figure from the other fasteners.
  • Let the exhaust cool before touching it; parts stay hot for some time after running.

Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
