Removing and installing C54 brake caliper piston — VW

Removing and installing C54 brake caliper piston on VW: 8 steps. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.

This is the reseal of the C54 brake caliper piston on the platform codes listed below, done with the caliper off the car. Compressed air pushes the piston out, the square-section seal is lifted from its groove with the removal wedge, and both the bore and piston are cleaned with methylated spirits and allowed to dry. A thin layer of assembly paste goes on the new seal and the piston. The dust cap is the fiddly part: its outer lip sits on the piston, while the inner lip has to be eased into the groove in the cylinder with the wedge before the piston is pushed in with the resetting tool. If that inner lip is not fully home, water gets in and the piston seizes again.

8 steps

🧭 Before you start

Remove the piston with compressed air and lever the seal out with the wedge. Clean piston and bore with methylated spirits, dry them, and coat the new seal and piston lightly with assembly paste. Fit the seal, place the cap on the piston, seat its inner lip in the cylinder groove with the wedge and press the piston home with the resetting tool.

Fits: platform codes 601, 602, 612, 641, 642, 643, 604, 644, 614, 603

Don't miss

  • Pad the caliper opening and keep hands clear when using compressed air on the piston.
  • Methylated spirits only for cleaning; other solvents can swell the rubber.
  • Inspect the bore for pitting; a damaged bore will not seal with new parts; general practice.
  • Seat the cap's inner sealing lip fully in the cylinder groove before pressing in the piston.

📋 Procedure

  1. Press piston out of brake caliper using compressed air.
  2. Remove seal using removal wedge3409.
  3. The surfaces of the piston and seal must be cleaned only with methylated spirits and then dried.
  4. Apply thin coat of assembly pasteG 052 150 A2 to piston and seal before installing.
  5. Insert seal into brake caliper.
  6. Place protective cap with outer sealing lip on piston.
  7. Using removal wedge3409, insert inner sealing lip into cylinder groove.
  8. Press piston into brake caliper using piston resetting tool.

Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
