Removing and installing alternator, 2.0 l TDI common rail injection engine — VW

Removing and installing alternator, 2.0 l TDI common rail injection engine on VW: 20 steps. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.

On the 2.0 l TDI common rail engine, platform 137, the alternator comes out from above once the front end has been opened up. The lock carrier goes into service position and the air duct with both radiator fans is removed, then the poly V-belt comes off. To make space, the air conditioning compressor is unbolted and hung on wire with its hoses still connected, and the fuel filter is unbolted and set aside with its hoses on. The DF connector, B+ lead and wiring retainer are freed, the two alternator bolts removed and the unit lifted out. Two details matter: belt direction marked before removal, and compressor hoses never stretched or kinked while it hangs. The cable retainer goes back at the 3 o'clock position.

20 steps

🧭 Before you start

Disconnect the battery, remove the engine cover, set the lock carrier to service position and remove the fan duct and poly V-belt. Unbolt and suspend the air conditioning compressor, disconnect the DF wire, B+ lead and wiring retainer, move the fuel filter aside and remove the two alternator bolts. Refit with the threaded sleeve driven out about 4 mm and the cable retainer at 3 o'clock, then run the engine to check the belt.

Fits: platform code 137

Don't miss

  • Mark the belt's top side and running direction before removal.
  • Hang the compressor on wire with hoses connected; do not stretch or kink them.
  • Fuel filter hoses stay connected when the filter is moved aside.
  • Drive threaded sleeve (A) out about 4 mm before installing the alternator.
  • Tighten the cable retainer at the rear in the 3 o'clock position.

Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
