Removing and installing alternator, 1.2 l 55 kW TDI common rail engine — VW

Removing and installing alternator, 1.2 l 55 kW TDI common rail engine on VW: 15 steps. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.

Taking the alternator off the 1.2 l 55 kW three-cylinder TDI common rail engine is a top-side job on the platform codes listed below. After the battery is disconnected, the engine cover, poly V-belt, cold-side charge air pipe and the air duct cowling with radiator fan V7 come out to give room. Two holders are removed, the DF connector is unplugged, the cap over the B+ terminal is levered off and the main lead and cable bracket are freed. The alternator bolts then come out and the unit lifts upwards out of the car. The belt is the thing to get right: mark its top side and running direction before removal, because a used belt refitted the wrong way round will be destroyed. On refit, drive the threaded sleeve out about 4 mm first.

🧭 Before you start

Disconnect the battery and remove the engine cover, poly V-belt, cold-side charge air pipe and fan cowling. Take off the holders, unplug the DF cable, remove the B+ lead and cable bracket, undo the mounting bolts and lift the alternator out upwards. On installation, drive the threaded sleeve out about 4 mm, tighten to the assembly overview torques, refit the belt correctly, reconnect the battery and check belt running.

Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
