Workshop procedure for VW — the exact step sequence and torque figures, straight from real workshop data.
🧭 Before you start
Fits: platform codes 5U8, 5U9, 5U2, 5U1
Don't miss

🔩 Torque settings
Values can differ between engine variants — check the code stamped on your block.
| Torque | Fastener / step |
|---|---|
| 10 Nm (7.4 lb-ft) | Open rear lid and tighten the screw (1 |
ℹ️ Always cross-check the exact figure against your vehicle's factory manual before final tightening — a wrong torque can damage the engine. These values are extracted from workshop data and may not cover every variant or revision.
📋 Procedure
- Turn the adjustment buffer by screwing or unscrewing it.
- Adjust clearance between the door and the side panel with the adjustment gauge3371.
- Open the rear lid again.
- Check the door adjustment and clearance.
- Turn the adjustment buffer 90° with a ring spanner (24) and remove it.
- Remove the cover (1) from the adjustment buffer and loosen the screw (3mm internal hexagonal), until it is possible to pull out the rod
- Pull the rod out of the box and adjust it to an (a) = 12.5 mm dimension. [Note: When new, the adjustment buffer is already adjusted to a 12.5 mm distance.]
- Install the adjustment buffer, turning it 90°.
- Close the rear lid with a slight pressure on its centre.
- With the adjustment gauge3371, adjust a 3.5 mm clearance between the hatch and the rear protective panel.
- Open the rear lid again.
- Thread the tightening screw (1) to dimension a = 20 + 5 mm. This way, the door will be adjusted to a pre-tension of approx. 2 mm.
- Check the door adjustment and clearance.
- Adjust the door's side buffers, following the sequence:
- Loosen the screw (1).
- Move the adjustment wedge (2) up and lightly tighten the screw (1) (both sides).
- Close rear lid.
- Open rear lid and tighten the screw (1) (10 Nm). [Note: There shall be (zero) clearance between the upper side buffer (4) and the adjustment wedge (2).] — 10 Nm (7.4 lb-ft)

Who makes these pages, and how
TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
