5 - Speed manual gearbox 02J — input shaft - adjust on VW: 10 steps, 2 torque figures. What to remove, what to tighten and to how many Nm, what to check.

Workshop procedure for VW — the exact step sequence and torque figures, straight from real workshop data.

10 steps 2 torque figures

🧭 Before you start

Fits: platform codes 9B1, 9B3

  • Special tools named: dial gauge

Don't miss

  • Repeat this process whenever a new measurement is desired. Otherwise, the dial gauge will not return to initial position.
  • The dial gauge does not go back to its initial position.

🔩 Torque settings

Values can differ between engine variants — check the code stamped on your block.

TorqueFastener / step
25 Nm (18 lb-ft) + 90°Assemble the gearbox housing and tighten the hex head screw
25 Nm (18 lb-ft) + 90°Install the input shaft in the clutch case, and assemble the gearbox housing

ℹ️ Always cross-check the exact figure against your vehicle's factory manual before final tightening — a wrong torque can damage the engine. These values are extracted from workshop data and may not cover every variant or revision.

📋 Procedure

  1. Install the outer track of the tapered roller bearing without the adjustment shim in the gearbox housing, to the stop, using the Pressure baseVW 510.
  2. Install the input shaft in the clutch case, and assemble the gearbox housing. Tighten the hex head screws to 25 Nm + 90°. — 25 Nm (18 lb-ft) + 90°
  3. Install the measuring device and the dial gauge on the clutch case (large tapered roller bearing in the gearbox housing).
  4. Before carrying out the reading, turn the input shaft in order for the tapered roller bearings to set. Reset the dial gauge to zero with 1-mm pre-tension. [Note: Repeat this process whenever a new measurement is desired. Otherwise, the dial gauge will not return to initial position.]
  5. Press the input shaft toward the dial gauge (arrow).

  1. Read and record the clearance indicated on the dial gauge (for example 1.21). [Note: The dial gauge does not go back to its initial position.]
  2. Determine the shim thickness according to the table (The value in the example is 1.175).
  3. Remove the input shaft and release the outer track of the tapered roller bearing in the gearbox housing, using the Pressure baseVW 447i.
  4. Install the outer track of the tapered roller bearing together with the correct adjustment shim in the gearbox housing, using the Pressure baseVW 510.
  5. Assemble the gearbox housing and tighten the hex head screw to 25 Nm + 90°. — 25 Nm (18 lb-ft) + 90°

Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
