Installing oil pump: VW Golf IV / Bora (BWS, BYD, CBRA, CDLA, …)
Step-by-step installing oil pump for the VW Golf IV / Bora: 11 steps, 3 torque figures. What to remove, what to tighten and to how many Nm, what to check.
This is the installation side of the oil pump on the direct shift gearbox fitted to the VW platform code listed below with the BWS, BYD, CBRA, CDLA, CDLC and CDLF engines. The pump is driven by a splined shaft that is pushed into the gearbox to its stop first; the pump then slides onto that shaft and must sit square on the dowel pins of the gearbox housing with a new gasket behind it. New bolts are used throughout: the pump bolts go in hand tight and are then pulled down diagonally to 5 Nm plus 90°, the new cover goes on with its own new bolts tightened diagonally in stages to 8 Nm, and the drain plug gets a new seal and 45 Nm. The gearbox then needs fresh oil and a filter before the wheel housing liner and noise insulation go back on. What matters is the spline engagement and the diagonal tightening sequence.
🧭 Before you start
The drive shaft is pushed into the gearbox to its stop, the gasket is renewed and the pump is slid onto the splines and seated on the dowel pins. New bolts are tightened hand tight, then diagonally to 5 Nm + 90°; the new cover and its new bolts follow diagonally in several stages to 8 Nm. The drain plug seal is renewed and the plug tightened to 45 Nm, the gearbox oil and filter are changed, and the wheel housing liner and noise insulation are refitted.
Fits: VW Golf IV / Bora (1J)
Don't miss
- Turn the drive shaft slightly while pushing it in so the splines engage fully.
- Renew the pump gasket, the drain plug seal and all pump and cover bolts; none are reused.
- Tighten pump bolts diagonally to 5 Nm + 90°, cover bolts diagonally in stages to 8 Nm.
- Drain plug to 45 Nm on a new seal.
- Change the gearbox oil and filter after the pump is installed, before the liner goes back.

ℹ️ Always cross-check the exact figure against your vehicle's factory manual before final tightening — a wrong torque can damage the engine. These values are extracted from workshop data and may not cover every variant or revision.

Who makes these pages, and how
TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
