Installing gearbox, Golf SV, Passat, Touran — VW

Installing gearbox, Golf SV, Passat, Touran on VW: 72 steps. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.

Gearbox refitting on the Golf Sportsvan (AM1, 2014–2020), Passat B8 (3G) and Touran II (5T) follows one method, though the route past the subframe differs slightly between bodies. The gearbox sits on support 3282 with adjustment plate 3282/46 on the engine and gearbox jack, pinned at the pendulum support hole, and is raised while a second mechanic presses the engine forward. The flange shafts have to be threaded past the subframe, flywheel and clutch pressure plate, watching the coolant hose and starter mounting as it goes up. Once joined, the mounting is aligned with the support bracket, the remaining bolts go in and the ancillaries return in order. Clean threads, new self-locking fasteners and an intermediate plate pushed onto its dowel sleeves decide whether it bolts up cleanly.

72 steps

🧭 Before you start

Clean threaded holes, check dowel sleeves and seat the intermediate plate on its flange and dowels, then grease the input shaft splines lightly. Mount the gearbox on 3282 with plate 3282/46 and pins 3282/29 and 3282/45, raise it with the engine pressed forward and guide the flange shafts past subframe, flywheel and dowel sleeve. Bolt the gearbox to the engine, fit the gearbox support with new bolts, align with 10 - 222 A and check mounting adjustment. Refit pendulum support, exhaust, driveshafts, starter, slave cylinder and selector cables, adjust the selector mechanism and check the gear oil.

Fits: VW Golf Sportsvan (AM1, 2014–2020), VW Passat B8 (3G, 2014–), VW Touran II (5T, 2015–)

  • Renewed: self-locking nuts

Don't miss

  • Renew self-locking nuts and bolts after removal and clean residual locking fluid from threads.
  • The adjustment plate fits in only one position; its arrow points in the direction of travel.
  • Watch the coolant hose and starter mounting when guiding the gearbox past the subframe.
  • Keep support bracket 10 - 222 A on until the mounting bolts reach specified torque.
  • Check assembly mounting adjustment and gear oil level before the car goes back down.

📋 Procedure

  1. All threaded holes into which self-locking bolts are to be screwed must be carefully cleaned of residual locking fluid using a thread chaser.
  2. Renew self-locking nuts and bolts after each removal.
  3. Check whether dowel sleeves for aligning engine and gearbox are fitted in cylinder block and install if necessary.
  4. Make sure that intermediate plate is engaged on sealing flange (top arrow) and pushed onto dowel sleeves (bottom arrows).
  5. Clean input shaft splines and apply thin coat of grease for clutch plate splines.

  1. Insert gearbox support3282 in engine and gearbox jack.
  2. Fit adjustment plate3282/46 on gearbox support3282 (adjustment plate fits in only one position).
  3. Align arms of gearbox support according to holes in adjustment plate.
  4. Attach support elements to adjustment plate as illustrated.
  5. Place gearbox on engine and gearbox jack.
  6. Align adjustment plate and gearbox parallel to one another.
  7. Then screw pin3282/29 into rear hole on gearbox for securing bolt of pendulum support.
  8. Secure pin3282/45 to gearbox using a M8 nut (arrow).
  9. Position engine and gearbox jack under vehicle. Arrow on adjustment plate points in direction of vehicle travel.
  10. Raise gearbox carefully. [Note: Be careful of all lines when installing gearbox.]
  11. Have a second mechanic press engine forwards.
  12. Then carefully guide gearbox and left-hand flange shaft (B) past subframe and guide right-hand flange shaft (A) past clutch pressure plate.
  13. Carefully guide gearbox with right flange shaft (A) past flywheel as shown in illustration.
  14. Align gearbox with engine in installation position.
  15. Position engine and gearbox jack under vehicle. Arrow on adjustment plate points in direction of vehicle travel.
  16. Lower gearbox to stop in the vicinity of differential in (direction of arrow) (different gearbox shown in illustration).
  17. Raise gearbox carefully.
  18. Have a second mechanic press engine forwards.
  19. While doing so, guide gearbox with flange shaft past flywheel, dowel sleeve (arrow 2) and, if necessary, past subframe (arrow 1).
  20. Be aware of coolant hose (1) and starter mounting (2) when guiding gearbox past subframe (3) (⇒ previous illustration).
  21. Guide left flange shaft (B) past subframe bracket (arrow).
  22. When raising gearbox, change position of gearbox as necessary using spindles of gearbox support3282. [Note: Be careful of all lines when raising the gearbox.]
  23. Align gearbox with engine in installation position.
  24. Insert gearbox and screw in and tighten bolts above and beneath right flange shaft (arrow).

Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
