Front seat belt - remove and install — VW

Front seat belt - remove and install on VW: 12 steps, 4 torque figures. What to remove, what to tighten and to how many Nm, what to check after.

Changing a front seat belt on the VW platform codes listed below means removing the inertia reel with its pretensioner from the B-pillar, so the pyrotechnic part of the belt is handled here. The lower anchor bolt comes out first, the lower B-pillar trim is removed, the guide cover folded back, and the belt guide and its screws are taken off before the reel bolt is undone. Torques here are specific: the reel and guide securing bolts and the lower anchorage take 40 Nm, while the small screws on the safety belt guide take only 3.5 Nm. The easily missed detail is the position lever, which must be installed at the assembly angle shown, 27° with the arrow pointing to the front of the vehicle.

12 steps 4 torque figures

🧭 Before you start

Remove the lower anchor bolt, the B-pillar lower trim and the belt guide, then the guide screws and the reel securing bolt, and lift out the reel with pretensioner. Refit the reel and tighten its bolt to 40 Nm, the belt guide screws to 3.5 Nm and the guide securing bolt to 40 Nm, setting the position lever at its assembly angle. Finally fit the lower anchorage and tighten its bolt to 40 Nm.

Fits: VW Fox (5Z)

Don't miss

  • Reel securing bolt, guide securing bolt and lower anchor bolt all to 40 Nm.
  • Safety belt guide screws only 3.5 Nm.
  • Install the position lever at an angle of 27°, arrow towards the front.
  • Handle the pretensioner as a pyrotechnic component; observe the usual safety rules.
  • Check the belt pulls out and retracts smoothly before refitting trim.

Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
