Checking coolant temperature sender: VW Passat B5 2.3 (AZX)
Step-by-step checking coolant temperature sender for the VW Passat B5 2.3 (AZX): 41 steps. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.
Checking coolant temperature sender G62 (combined with display sender G2) on the platform code 3B3 with the AZX engine, using an older-generation fault reader. The first check is in measured value block display group 4: read the coolant temperature in display zone 3 and watch it climb uniformly with the engine at idle, in steps of 1.0 °C. If the reading is implausible, the 4-pin connector is pulled and contacts 3 and 4 bridged to see how the display responds. Beyond that it becomes a wiring check with the test box on the control unit harness, looking for open circuit, short to earth and short to battery positive, then a resistance measurement at the sender. Work methodically so you do not renew a good sender or control unit.
🧭 Before you start
Connect the fault reader, select the engine control unit and read display group 4 while the engine warms at idle. If the value does not rise evenly, pull the 4-pin connector, bridge contacts 3 and 4 and watch the display. Then check the wiring between the test box and the connector for open and short circuits, measure the sender resistance, and renew the sender or, as a last step, the control unit. Read and clear the fault memory at the end.
Fits: VW Passat B5 (3B)
- Special tools named: V.A.G 1551, V.A.G 1552, V.A.G 1598/31
- Renewed: engine control unit
Don't miss
- The temperature reading must rise uniformly at idle; it moves in steps of 1.0 °C.
- Leave the engine control unit disconnected while the test box is on the harness.
- Check both lines for short to battery positive as well; specification is infinite resistance.
- Renewing the control unit is the last step, only after sender and wiring check out.
- Read and clear the fault memory once the repair is done.

Who makes these pages, and how
TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
