Checking air mass meter G70: VW Golf IV / Bora (AGP, AGR, AHF, ALH, …)
Step-by-step checking air mass meter G70 for the VW Golf IV / Bora: 25 steps. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.
Testing the air mass meter G70 on the TDI engines listed below, platform codes 1J1 and 1J2. The check runs in two parts. First, with the fault reader connected to the engine electronics and the engine idling, display group 10 shows air mass at idle, specification 230...370 mg/stroke; outside that, the exhaust gas recirculation is checked first. Second, a road test: from about 1500 rpm in 3rd gear at full throttle, the reading is printed at about 3000 rpm and should exceed 800 mg/stroke with display zone 4 at 100 %. If it fails, the supply voltage and the wiring to the diesel control unit J248 are checked before parts are renewed. Secure the tester and operate it from the rear seat.
🧭 Before you start
Connect the fault reader, read display group 10 at idle and compare with 230...370 mg/stroke, checking EGR if out of range. Road test in 3rd gear at full throttle and confirm over 800 mg/stroke. If the meter fails, end data transfer, unplug G70, check its voltage supply with ignition on, then test the wiring to J248 with the adapter for open and short circuits before renewing G70 or J248.
Fits: VW Golf IV / Bora (1J)
Don't miss
- Secure the fault reader on the rear seat and operate it from there during the road test.
- Check exhaust gas recirculation before condemning G70 on a low idle reading.
- At full throttle display zone 4 must read 100 % for the test to be valid.
- Check wiring for shorts to earth, battery positive and each other, not just open circuits.

Who makes these pages, and how
TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
