Bleeding clutch mechanism — VW

Bleeding clutch mechanism on VW: 18 steps, engines BBU, BYD, CDLA, CDLC. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.

Bleeding the hydraulic clutch on the platform codes listed below (5C7, 5C1), across petrol and diesel engines from BBU to CJXC, is done with pressure bleeding equipment rather than by pumping the pedal alone. The air filter housing comes out to reach the bleeder valve on the slave cylinder. The equipment pressurises the system to 2 bar, about 100 cm3 of fluid is let out, then the pedal is worked rapidly from stop to stop 10 to 15 times to shift trapped air before another 50 cm3 is run through. Success comes down to two things: the equipment being fully depressurised before it is disconnected, and a firm, consistent pedal afterwards.

🧭 Before you start

Remove the air filter housing and put the clutch pedal in its rest position. Connect the bleeding equipment and a bleeder hose to the slave cylinder valve, pressurise to 2 bar and let about 100 cm3 out. Close the valve, pump the pedal 10 to 15 times, open again and let a further 50 cm3 through. Switch off and fully relieve the equipment, press the pedal several times and refit the air filter housing.

Fits: platform codes 5C7, 5C1

  • Opens: brake fluid
  • Special tools named: V.A.G 1869

Don't miss

  • Start with the clutch pedal in its rest position.
  • Pressurise to 2 bar; do not exceed the stated pressure.
  • Work the pedal rapidly from stop to stop 10 to 15 times between the two bleed stages.
  • Relieve all pressure from the equipment before disconnecting it.
  • Check the pedal returns fully and feels firm before refitting the air filter housing.

Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
