4-speed automatic transmission 001 — Removing and installing valve chest — VW
4-speed automatic transmission 001 — Removing and installing valve chest on VW: 21 steps. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.
Removing and installing the valve body on the 4-speed 001 automatic gearbox in the VW Polo. The work is done from below with the ATF drained and the sump off, so the car must not be driven, towed or run until it is refilled. Inside, the valve wire, bolts and solenoid valve 6N93 come off, along with the holders and identification tag, before the valve body can be lowered out. On reassembly the bolts of different lengths go back in their own holes, O-rings are renewed, and the fill plug gets a new seal. Afterwards the gearbox is refilled, the level is checked and a basic setting is run through the diagnostic tester. Bolt positions and that basic setting are what decide the outcome.
🧭 Before you start
Drain the ATF and remove the sump, then unbolt the valve wire, separate the connection and remove solenoid valve 6N93 and the valve body bolts. Fit the valve body with renewed O-rings, keeping the two bolt types in their correct positions, and refit the holders and identification tag as illustrated. Fit a new seal to the plug, fill with ATF and check the level. Finish with the basic setting through the self-diagnosis functions on the tester.
Fits: platform code POLO
- Special tools named: VAS 5051
- Renewed: seal, seal to plug, o-rings
Don't miss
- Do not run the engine or tow the car with the sump off or ATF drained.
- Do not mix up bolts A and B; each has its own position.
- Renew the O-rings and always fit a new seal to the filler plug.
- Run the gearbox basic setting with the diagnostic tester after repair.

Who makes these pages, and how
TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
