Timing chain replacement: Renault non type specific 2.0 dCi (M9R-610, M9R-615, M9R-630, M9R-692, …)

Step-by-step timing chain replacement for the Renault non type specific 2.0 dCi: 112 steps. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.

Timing chain replacement on Renault's M9R 2.0 dCi diesel, a job that covers the full spread of outputs with and without particulate filter. Unlike a belt engine, the chain sits behind a sealed cover, so the ancillary belt, coolant pump and engine support bracket come off before the timing chain cover can be released. The crankshaft is set to TDC with the locking pin and the camshaft gearwheels held with the locking tool before their bolts are loosened. The chain tensioner is pinned and removed, then the camshaft gearwheel and chain. On reassembly the tensioner guide and tensioner go back, the cover is sealed and tightened in sequence, and the crankshaft oil seal is renewed with the tool from the spare parts kit. New gaskets throughout and correct sealant application decide whether it stays dry.

🧭 Before you start

Remove the ancillary belt, coolant pump and engine support bracket, lock the crankshaft at TDC and hold the camshaft gearwheels. Remove the timing cover, pin and remove the tensioner, take off the camshaft gearwheel and chain. Fit the new chain, guide and tensioner, seal and refit the cover in sequence, fit a new crankshaft seal with the kit tool, then refit pulley, pump, bracket and belt.

Fits: platform codes 2.0, DCI, |, 115, (B30), FAP, 130, 150, 16V, 160, 175

  • Timing position: the crankshaft or camshaft is set and locked during this job
  • Special tools named: locking pin, locking tool

Don't miss

  • Lock the crankshaft at TDC with the pin before loosening the camshaft gearwheel bolts.
  • Pin the chain tensioner before removing it.
  • Always use new gaskets; apply sealant at the points shown.
  • Discard the old crankshaft oil seal and fit the new one with the kit tool.
  • Tighten the timing cover and support bracket in the specified sequence.

Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
