Timing belt replacement: Peugeot 607 (ES9J4S)
Step-by-step timing belt replacement for the Peugeot 607 (ES9J4S): 91 steps. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.
Timing belt renewal on the 607 with the ES9J4S (XFX) 3.0 V6. Work starts with the battery, engine lower cover, ancillary drive belt, power steering pump pulley and the timing belt covers. The camshaft gearwheels are rotated clockwise to their lock position and pinned on both banks, the crankshaft is pinned, and the belt is fitted anti-clockwise starting at the crankshaft gearwheel. When engaging it on each camshaft gearwheel, turn the gearwheel slightly against engine rotation, never by more than one tooth space. The result depends on two checks: the tensioner marks align after the engine is turned twice, and the camshaft gearwheels are not at the end of their slots.
🧭 Before you start
Remove the lower cover, drive belt, power steering pulley and belt covers, lock the camshafts and crankshaft, slacken the tensioner and remove the belt and idler. Fit the new belt anti-clockwise from the crankshaft, take the tensioner to maximum tension, tighten the gearwheel bolts and remove the pins. Turn the engine two rotations clockwise, refit the crankshaft pin, align the tensioner marks and check the camshaft pins fit, restarting if the gearwheels sit at the end of their slots. Refit the covers, crankshaft pulley with a new bolt in two stages, pulleys, drive belt and supports.
Fits: platform codes 3.0, V6
- Timing position: the crankshaft or camshaft is set and locked during this job
- Special tools named: locking pin
Don't miss
- Adjust the belt with the engine cold.
- Belt movement against a gearwheel must not exceed one tooth space.
- If camshaft gearwheels are at the end of their slots, restart the fitting.
- Crankshaft pulley bolt is renewed and tightened in two stages.
- Repeat the procedure if the special tools do not fit properly.

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
