Timing belt replacement: Peugeot 407 (EW12E4, EW12J4)
Step-by-step timing belt replacement for the Peugeot 407 (EW12E4/EW12J4): 96 steps. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.
Timing belt renewal on the Peugeot 407 2.2 16V, engine codes EW12J4 and EW12E4. The engine mount reaction link and coolant reservoir come out of the way, then the ancillary belt, crankshaft pulley and timing belt covers. With the crankshaft locked and the inlet and exhaust camshafts pinned, the tensioner is released and the old belt comes off. The new belt is routed in the stated sequence and the tensioner turned to maximum tension before being backed off until its pointer lines up with the mark. The crankshaft pulley bolt is renewed and torqued in stages. These engines punish shortcuts: never turn the crankshaft backwards, and if the tensioner marker will not reach position the pulley is suspect. After two turns the inlet locking tool must fit and the tensioner marks align.
🧭 Before you start
Remove reaction link, coolant reservoir, ancillary belt, pulley and covers. Lock the crankshaft and camshafts, release the tensioner and remove the belt. Fit the new belt in sequence, set the tensioner to its marks, fit a new crankshaft pulley bolt in stages, remove the tools and turn two turns to recheck. Refit covers, reaction link, ancillary belt and reservoir.
Fits: platform codes 2.2, 16V
- Timing position: the crankshaft or camshaft is set and locked during this job
- Special tools named: locking tool, locking pin
Don't miss
- Never turn the engine opposite to its normal direction of rotation.
- Avoid bending, twisting or stretching the new belt.
- Renew the crankshaft pulley bolt and tighten it in stages.
- If the tensioner marker cannot reach its position, check the tensioner pulley.
- After two crankshaft turns, the inlet camshaft locking tool must fit and the tensioner marks must align.

Who makes these pages, and how
TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
