Astra F X16XEL — OPEL / VAUXHALL
Astra F X16XEL on Opel / Vauxhall: 81 steps, engines X14XE, X16XEL. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.
Cylinder head removal on the Opel/Vauxhall Astra F with the 1.6 16V X16XEL, with the X14XE covered as a variant. Before the battery is touched, get the radio security code. The job strips the top of the engine in layers: upper cover, wiring loom, inlet manifold with its vacuum and coolant connections, throttle body, fuel lines after the pressure is released, alternator and its bracket, then the exhaust downpipe. Only then do the valve cover and timing belt covers come off. What decides the outcome is the timing set-up: check the marks, take the crankshaft back to 60° BTDC so no valve can meet a piston, and mark the tensioner position before the belt, camshaft gearwheels and head bolts are removed.
🧭 Before you start
Note the radio code, then remove the upper cover, loom, inlet manifold, throttle body and fuel lines after relieving fuel pressure. Take off the alternator and bracket, radiator hoses and exhaust downpipe, then the spark plugs, valve cover and timing belt covers. Check the timing marks, turn the crankshaft to 60° BTDC and remove the belt, camshaft gearwheels, tensioner and idler, crankshaft gearwheel and inner cover. Finally remove the rocker shaft assembly, head bolts and the cylinder head.
Fits: platform codes 1.6I, 16V
- Timing position: the crankshaft or camshaft is set and locked during this job
Don't miss
- Get the audio security code before disconnecting the battery.
- Release fuel pressure before opening the feed and return lines.
- Turn the crankshaft to 60° BTDC before the timing belt comes off.
- Mark the tensioner pulley position before removing it.
- Lock the crankshaft with the special tool when undoing the crankshaft gearwheel.
- General practice: head bolts on engines of this type are usually stretch bolts and are renewed.

Who makes these pages, and how
TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
