Cylinder head removal & torque: Opel Astra F 2.0 (C20XE)

Step-by-step cylinder head removal & torque for the Opel Astra F 2.0 (C20XE): 78 steps. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.

Cylinder head removal on the Opel/Vauxhall Astra F with the C20XE 2.0i 16V engine is a timing-belt-and-twin-cam job. Note the audio security code before the battery goes, drain the cooling system, and work round the head: inlet manifold and resonance duct, tank vent valve, injection wiring, hoses, ignition coil, exhaust manifold heat shield, oxygen sensor and exhaust downpipe. The front right wheel and V-belt come off so the alternator can be moved aside without disconnecting it, then the timing belt front cover, crankshaft vibration damper and valve cover. The crankshaft is set at TDC for cylinder 1 and then turned back to 60° BTDC before the belt and camshafts come out, which keeps the valves clear. Head bolts and cam caps are tightened in stages to the listed data.

🧭 Before you start

Record the radio code, disconnect the battery and drain the coolant. Remove the inlet manifold, exhaust manifold and downpipe, wiring and hoses, the V-belt and alternator, the timing belt cover and vibration damper, and the valve cover. Set TDC, then turn to 60° BTDC, remove the timing belt, camshaft gearwheels, sensor, rear cover and camshafts, release the head bolts and lift the head. Refit in reverse, tightening head bolts and camshaft caps in stages.

Fits: platform codes 2.0I, 16V

  • Opens: coolant
  • Timing position: the crankshaft or camshaft is set and locked during this job

Don't miss

  • Check the audio system security code before disconnecting the battery.
  • Turn the crankshaft to 60° BTDC before removing the camshafts to keep the valves clear.
  • Tighten cylinder head bolts in stages to the listed torque settings.
  • Plug the fuel lines as soon as they are disconnected.

Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
