Gearbox removal & installation: Opel Astra F 17DT 1.7 TD (X17DT)
Step-by-step gearbox removal & installation for the Opel Astra F 17DT 1.7 TD (X17DT): 54 steps. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.
Removing the engine and gearbox from the Opel/Vauxhall Astra F 1.7 TDS (X17DT) is done downwards, with the unit lowered out on a jack and the front subframe removed. Before anything is unplugged, read the audio security code and lock the gear-shift lever. On top, the expansion tank hoses, brake servo vacuum hose, oil pressure switch, starter, alternator and ECU wiring, injection pump cable, fuel lines, power steering lines, clutch cable and speedometer cable are released, and the gear selector rod is marked and separated. Underneath, the front exhaust pipe, steering arm ball joints, rear engine support, subframe and both drive shafts come out. Marking the selector rod is what saves gear-change adjustment later.
🧭 Before you start
Note the radio code, lock the gear-shift lever, then disconnect hoses, wiring, cables and fuel and power steering lines between the engine/gearbox and the body. Mark and disconnect the selector rod, attach a hoist, remove the wheels, exhaust front pipe, steering ball joints and rear engine support, then the subframe. Release both drive shafts with the special tool, support the unit on a jack, free the engine supports and lower it out.
Fits: platform codes 1.7, TDS
- Opens: fuel

Who makes these pages, and how
TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
