Workshop procedure for AUDI — the exact step sequence and torque figures, straight from real workshop data.
🧭 Before you start
Fits: Audi A6 C5 (4B)
Don't miss
- Prior to removal, mark direction of poly V-belt with chalk or a felt-tip pen. Running a used poly V-belt in the opposite direction could destroy it.
- The lock carrier does not have to be moved to service position.
- If alternator sticks in holder, screw bolt back in again down to the last 2 turns.Tap carefully on bolt heads with flat side of hammer to release bushes of alternator mount.
- Stiff alternator mount bushes must be released as otherwise the clamping force of the bush will not be adequate even if tightened to correct torque.
- Make sure poly V-belt is properly positioned and correctly routed.
📋 Procedure
- With ignition switched off, disconnect earth wire at battery .
- Unscrew coolant expansion tank (arrow).
- Disconnect wire to coolant shortage indicator switch F66 at bottom of expansion tank and lay aside coolant expansion tank (2) with coolant hoses (1) and (3) connected.
- Detach air hose (1) from charge air cooler at throttle valve housing. [Note: Prior to removal, mark direction of poly V-belt with chalk or a felt-tip pen. Running a used poly V-belt in the opposite direction could destroy it.]
- To slacken off poly V-belt, swivel belt tensioner in (direction of arrow).
- Detach poly V-belt from alternator pulley.
- Release tensioner. [Note: The lock carrier does not have to be moved to service position.]
- Secure pulley for viscous fan with pin punch (1) and unscrew using Allen key (2).
- Detach viscous fan and set it down in radiator cowl.
- Unscrew wire (2) for terminal 30/B+ at alternator.
- Unscrew terminal D+ (Item 1).
- Disengage wiring harness from cable tie (arrow).
- Screw out bolts (arrows) and detach alternator. [Note: If alternator sticks in holder, screw bolt back in again down to the last 2 turns.Tap carefully on bolt heads with flat side of hammer to release bushes of alternator mount.] [Note: The hose connections and hoses for the charge air system must be free of oil and grease before assembly.Secure all hose connections with standard clamps Parts catalogue.]
- To facilitate positioning of alternator, drive back bushings for securing bolts slightly. [Note: Stiff alternator mount bushes must be released as otherwise the clamping force of the bush will not be adequate even if tightened to correct torque.]
- Make sure poly V-belt is properly positioned and correctly routed.
- Connect battery. Action to be taken .
- Start engine and check belt routing.

Who makes these pages, and how
TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
Seen a figure that does not match your manual? Write to us — we correct it and note when. support@torqfix.com
