Removing gearbox - vehicles with 3.2 ltr. FSI engine: Audi Q5
Step-by-step removing gearbox - vehicles with 3.2 ltr. FSI engine for the Audi Q5: 56 steps. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.
This procedure removes the automatic gearbox on the Audi Q5 (8R, 2008–2017) with the 3.2 ltr. FSI engine, and on the 83 platform code. The front wheels go straight ahead before the battery is disconnected and the steering must not move after the universal joint is pressed off the rack, or the airbag coil connector can be damaged. Power steering fluid is extracted, the right catalytic converter and left front silencer removed, and the ATF lines detached and plugged. The engine is hung on the support bracket, the drive shafts and selector cable freed, the subframe cross brace and propshaft removed, and the six drive plate bolts undone while turning the crankshaft 60° each time. The gearbox goes onto the jack support, never on the ATF pan, before the tunnel cross member bolts come out.
🧭 Before you start
Set the wheels straight, disconnect the battery and extract power steering fluid. Remove covers, wheels, insulation, body brace, catalytic converter and front silencer, then disconnect and plug the ATF lines. Support the engine, free drive shafts, selector cable and steering joint, remove the cross brace and propshaft, and unbolt the drive plate. Disconnect the steering hydraulic line, support the gearbox on the jack, remove the remaining bolts and lower it.
Fits: Audi Q5 (8R, 2008–2017); platform code 83
- Opens: power steering fluid
- Special tools named: T40091/3, T40093/3, T10172/5, T40058
Don't miss
- Keep wheels straight and do not move the steering after detaching the universal joint.
- Turn the crankshaft only in the direction of engine rotation when undoing drive plate bolts.
- Never position the gearbox support on the ATF oil pan.
- Do not let the car down on its wheels without gearbox mounting, rack and cross brace fitted.
- Discharge static before touching the mechatronic connectors.

- Remove bolts (arrows) and detach heat shield for drive shaft (left-side).
- Unbolt drive shafts (left and right) from flange shafts on gearbox.
- Use removal lever80 - 200 to press ball socket (2) on selector lever cable off gearbox selector lever.
- Pull off retaining clip (1) and move selector lever cable clear. [Note: Do not bend or kink the selector lever cable.]
- ⚠ The gearbox control unit (mechatronic unit) can be damaged by electrostatic discharge. Before handling electrical connectors, mechanic must discharge static. To do so, touch vehicle earth, heater radiator, or lifting platform, with your hand.Do not touch contact pins in gearbox connector with bare hands. — Turn fastener anti-clockwise (arrow) and unplug electrical connector on gearbox.
- Disconnect electrical connector (2) at engine speed sender G28 and move wiring clear at gearbox. [Note: (Item 1) can be disregarded.]
- ⚠ Risk of damage to coil connector for airbag.Front wheels must be in straight-ahead position when universal joint is detached from steering rack.Do not change position of steering wheel or steering rack after this step (if necessary, fix steering wheel in position with adhesive tape). — Remove bolt (arrow) for universal joint Running gear, axles, steering48Steering column; Exploded view - steering column.
- Press universal joint off steering rack and push all the way up.
- Remove subframe cross brace Running gear, axles, steering40Subframe; Removing and installing subframe cross brace.
- ⚠ Risk of damage to parts of the running gear.Do not let the vehicle down on the wheels if the gearbox mounting, steering rack or subframe cross brace are not properly installed. — If fitted, remove bolts (arrows) and detach heat shield (1) for propshaft.
- Remove bolts from connection between propshaft and gearbox (counterhold using counter-hold tool T10172 with T10172/5).
- Slide propshaft together towards rear final drive. The constant velocity joints can be moved axially.
- Tie propshaft up to one side. [Note: Please refer to the vehicle data sticker or the identification on the rear final drive to find out which type of rear final drive is installed in the vehicle. Then select the appropriate Workshop Manual for the rear final drive.]

Who makes these pages, and how
TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
