Removing and installing tunnel cross member: Audi A8 D3
Step-by-step removing and installing tunnel cross member for the Audi A8 D3: 30 steps. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.
The tunnel cross member carries the gearbox mountings, so taking it out means the gearbox has to be held up separately and the rear of the engine/gearbox assembly lowered with care. This page merges several variants on the platform code listed below. The front exhaust pipes are disconnected and tied aside, heat shields and noise insulation come off and the propshaft is unbolted from the gearbox. The engine cross member and subframe are supported on the jack, the rear subframe bolts and supports removed, and the gearbox picked up via an M12x100 bolt in the mounting hole behind the oil pan, never on the pan or the oil coolers. Mark the cross member position on the body before unbolting it, and on refit align the gearbox mountings free of stress.
🧭 Before you start
Remove the intake hose, raise the car and disconnect the front exhaust, heat shields, noise insulation and propshaft. Support the engine cross member and subframe, remove the rear subframe bolts and supports, and support the gearbox on a bolt in its mounting hole. Mark and unbolt the tunnel cross member, lower the assembly and remove it. Refit to the marks, align the mountings stress-free and reconnect propshaft, exhaust and subframe.
Fits: Audi A8 D3 (4E, 2002–2010)
Don't miss
- Never support the gearbox on the ATF cooler, gear oil cooler or oil pan.
- Mark the cross member position on the body before removal and refit to those marks.
- Watch the whole engine compartment while lowering so nothing gets crushed or stretched.
- Hand-tighten gearbox mounting bolts first, then tighten once alignment is stress-free.

- ⚠ When performing the steps below, please note the following:Do not support the gearbox on the ATF cooler or gear oil cooler - risk of damage. — Support engine cross member and subframe using engine and gearbox jackV.A.G 1383 A as illustrated.
- Remove bolts (1) and (2) at rear of subframe on both sides of vehicle 40.
- Remove supports for subframe (A).
- ⚠ When performing the steps below, please note the following:Do not support the gearbox under the oil pan - risk of damage. — Insert a bolt M12x100 (item 1) with attached nut (2) into the mounting hole behind the oil pan on the gearbox.
- Apply lifting column of engine and gearbox jackV.A.G 1383 A to bolt head as illustrated and raise gearbox slightly.
- Remove bracket for noise insulation below ATF cooler.
- If fitted, detach bracket for electrical connectors (1) and (2) for lambda probes from tunnel cross member (arrows).
- Mark installation position of tunnel cross member for gearbox on body.
- Remove bolts securing gearbox mountings (left (1) and right (2)) to tunnel cross member.
- Unbolt tunnel cross member for gearbox from body (arrows).
- Place tunnel cross member on front exhaust pipes.
- Carefully lower engine and gearbox assembly at rear using engine and gearbox jackV.A.G 1383 A.
- It is important to watch all parts of the engine compartment to prevent damage.
- Remove tunnel cross member.
- Hand-tighten bolts (1) and (2) securing gearbox mounting to tunnel cross member.
- Raise gearbox and bolt tunnel cross member to body (arrows). [Note: Check the pen markings.]
- Bolt gearbox mounting to tunnel cross member (1) and (2) (ensure stress-free alignment).
- Bolt propshaft to gearbox flange Rear final drive 01R39 or Rear final drive 0AR39.

Who makes these pages, and how
TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
