Removing and installing exterior door handle: Audi A6/A7 C7

Step-by-step removing and installing exterior door handle for the Audi A6/A7 C7: 13 steps. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.

The exterior door handle on the Audi A6 and A7 (4G, 2011–2018) comes off without disturbing the door trim or the lock; everything is done from the door end face and the outside. With the door seal pushed aside, a protective film is peeled back from the access hole. Behind it is the clamping bolt, which is unscrewed as far as it goes with a screwdriver but not taken out. The handle is pulled out and held open, the retainer for the end housing pressed inwards so the handle locks in that position, and the housing is drawn out of the mounting bracket. The handle then pulls off the operating lever and swivels out of its mounting; on cars with convenience key there is a connector to unplug. Fitting is the critical part: the handle must engage in the mounting, and the driver is pushed in ahead of the operating lever before the housing goes back on.

🧭 Before you start

Access is through the hole in the door end face under the seal and the protective film. The clamping bolt is backed off, the handle held open and locked by pressing the housing retainer, the end housing removed, and the handle detached from the operating lever and swivelled out, unplugging the convenience key connector where fitted. Backing plates are renewed if brittle, then the handle is engaged in its mounting, the driver pushed in front of the operating lever, the retainer pressed back and the housing refitted with its retaining clip.

Fits: Audi A6/A7 C7 (4G, 2011–2018)

Don't miss

  • Clamping bolt (4) is only backed off as far as possible, not removed.
  • Press retainer (3) inwards while the handle is held open; it locks the handle for removal.
  • Convenience key cars: unplug the handle connector before pulling the handle clear.
  • Renew backing plates (1) and (2) if damaged or brittle.
  • On fitting, push the driver (5) in front of operating lever (4) before pressing the retainer back.
  • General practice: secure the housing with its clip and check the handle returns freely before closing the door.

Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
