Removing and installing driver’s airbag unit for sports steering wheel — AUDI
Removing and installing driver’s airbag unit for sports steering wheel on Audi: 6 steps, 1 torque figure.
Despite the airbag in the title, this procedure is really about removing and refitting the sports steering wheel on the 4B platform code, with the driver's airbag unit coming out first under the usual airbag precautions. With the airbag off, the road wheels are set straight ahead and the steering wheel centred, the centre bolt is removed and the wheel lifted off. On refit the wheel goes on in the centre position with the road wheels still straight, and the bolt is replaced with a new one and tightened to 50 Nm before the airbag unit goes back in. Getting the centre position right and not reusing the bolt are the two things that matter; an off-centre wheel means a crooked spoke and a call-back.
🧭 Before you start
Remove the airbag unit, centre the steering with the road wheels straight ahead and take out the wheel bolt. Fit the steering wheel centred, fit a new bolt at 50 Nm and reinstall the airbag unit.
Fits: Audi A6 C5 (4B)
Don't miss
- Road wheels straight ahead and steering wheel centred before removal and refitting.
- Renew the steering wheel bolt; tighten to 50 Nm.
- As general practice, follow airbag precautions: battery disconnected and the unit stored face up.
- Check the wheel is straight on a short test drive.

Who makes these pages, and how
TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
