Removing and installing airbag unit (driver side) on 4-spoke steering wheel on Audi: 27 steps. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.
Workshop procedure for AUDI — the exact step sequence and torque figures, straight from real workshop data.
🧭 Before you start
Fits: Audi A3 (8P, 2003–2012)
Don't miss
- Make sure you hear connector and locking element of detonator connector (6) engage correctly.Make sure that wiring is not trapped.
- Turn steering wheel (3) to centre position (spoke must be horizontal).
- Plug detonator connector (6) into airbag unit (5). Wire must face upwards.
- Lock detonator connector (6) in position. Make sure you hear connector and locking element engage correctly.
- Wires must not make contact with gas generator.Make sure wiring for detonator connector is not trapped.
📋 Procedure
- ⚠ Observe safety regulations for pyrotechnic components .Observe disposal regulations for pyrotechnic components .Before handling pyrotechnic components (e.g. unplugging the electrical connector) the mechanic must discharge static electricity by briefly touching the door striker plate, or similar.Set down airbag with impact cushion facing upwards.Airbag unit must NOT be installed if steering column electronics control unit is not fitted at steering column switch module . — Pull steering wheel out, moving it upwards as far as possible.
- Turn steering wheel (3) to centre position (wheels in straight-ahead position).
- With ignition switched off, disconnect battery earth wire 27.
- Turn steering wheel (3) out of centre position approx. 80° towards the right.
- Slacken off bolt (2).
- Turn steering wheel (3) approx. 160° to the left.
- Slacken off bolt (2).
- Turn steering wheel (3) to centre position (wheels in straight-ahead position).
- Lift airbag unit (5) off steering wheel.
- Release detonator connector (connector for airbag unit) (6).
- Unplug detonator connector (6).
- Unplug horn connector (8).
- Detach airbag unit (5). [Note: Make sure you hear connector and locking element of detonator connector (6) engage correctly.Make sure that wiring is not trapped.]
- Turn steering wheel (3) to centre position (spoke must be horizontal).
- Set down airbag unit (5) at lower rim section of steering wheel (3).
- Plug detonator connector (6) into airbag unit (5). Wire must face upwards.
- Lock detonator connector (6) in position. Make sure you hear connector and locking element engage correctly.
- Attach horn connector (8) to appropriate connector.
- Route detonator connector wire to left in a loop.
- Route horn wire outwards in a loop. [Note: Wires must not make contact with gas generator.Make sure wiring for detonator connector is not trapped.]
- Position airbag unit (5) in steering wheel. [Note: Hold airbag unit in position while you are screwing it on.]
- Turn steering wheel (3) out of centre position approx. 80° towards the right.
- Screw in bolt (2) approx. 2 turns.
- Turn steering wheel (3) approx. 160° to the left.
- Screw in bolt (2) approx. 2 turns.
- Tighten bolts (2) to specified torque.
- ⚠ The battery must be connected with the ignition switched on. If pyrotechnic components (e.g. airbag or belt tensioner) are inexpertly repaired, this may result in unwanted triggering after connecting the battery. There must not be anyone in the vehicle while you are connecting the battery. — With ignition switched on, connect battery earth wire 27. [Note: If airbag warning lamp K75 indicates a fault following installation, you must interrogate, erase and then re-interrogate the fault memory .]

Who makes these pages, and how
TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
Seen a figure that does not match your manual? Write to us — we correct it and note when. support@torqfix.com
