Removing and installing coolant pump - all engine codes except CUKB, CXUA — AUDI
Removing and installing coolant pump - all engine codes except CUKB, CXUA on Audi: 22 steps, 1 torque figure, engines CJZA, CMBA, CPTA, CSSA.
On the Audi A3 (8V, 2012–2020) petrol engines listed below, apart from CUKB and CXUA, the coolant pump sits at the back of the engine and is driven by its own small toothed belt behind a cover. With the coolant drained, the air pipe, charge pressure sender connector, charcoal filter hose and crankcase breather hose are removed and the harness and hoses moved clear. The belt cover comes off, the pump bolts are slackened in the order 5 to 1, and the pump comes away with the belt. Belt tension is set on installation: pre-tighten, back off one turn, then have a second mechanic hold 30 Nm on the pump with torque wrench VAS 6583 while the bolts are tightened in sequence. Renew the belt with a new pump.
🧭 Before you start
Drain the coolant, remove the air pipe and disconnect the sender connector, charcoal filter hose and breather hose. Take off the toothed belt cover, slacken the pump bolts in sequence 5 to 1 and remove the pump with its belt. Check the gaskets, wet the seal with coolant, fit the belt centred, pre-tighten the bolts, back them off one turn, tension the pump at 30 Nm and tighten in sequence. Fill with fresh coolant.
Fits: Audi A3 (8V, 2012–2020); platform code 85
- Opens: coolant
- Special tools named: T10527/1, VAS 6583, torque wrench
- Renewed: seal, toothed belt as well
Don't miss
- Renew the seal; a new coolant pump always gets a new toothed belt as well.
- Slacken bolts in the order 5 to 1 and tighten them in the specified sequence.
- Pump preload is 30 Nm, applied by a second mechanic on VAS 6583 with a 10 mm hex key.
- Do not support the torque wrench with your other hand or overload it.
- Check the gaskets are correctly seated before positioning the pump.
- Do not reuse drained coolant.

Values can differ between engine variants — check the code stamped on your block.
| Torque | Fastener / step |
|---|---|
| 30 Nm (22 lb-ft) | Have a second mechanic apply a torque |
ℹ️ Always cross-check the exact figure against your vehicle's factory manual before final tightening — a wrong torque can damage the engine. These values are extracted from workshop data and may not cover every variant or revision.

📋 Procedure
- Drain coolant .
- Loosen hose clips (1, 2) and remove air pipe.
- Unplug electrical connector (1) at charge pressure sender G31 / intake air temperature sender 2G299. [Note: Disregard (arrows).]
- Move air hoses clear at air pipe.
- Release fasteners (arrows) with release tool T10527 and T10527/1, and detach air pipe (1).
- Press release tabs and disconnect hose (1) for activated charcoal filter.
- Remove bolts (arrows) and detach crankcase breather hose.
- Move clear electrical wiring harness (1) and coolant hose (2).
- Release hose clips (arrows) and disconnect coolant hoses.
- Move electrical wiring harness clear (arrows).
- Unscrew bolts (1, 3) and remove cover (2) for toothed belt for coolant pump.
- Slacken and remove bolts in the sequence: (5 ... 1).
- Detach coolant pump with toothed belt. [Note: Renew seal.If coolant pump is being renewed, renew toothed belt as well.Secure all hose connections with the correct type of hose clips (same as original equipment) Electronic parts catalogue.]
- Check that gaskets are correctly seated (arrows).
- Lubricate seal for coolant pump lightly with coolant.
- Fit toothed belt so that it is centred and move coolant pump into installation position.
- Pre-tighten bolts in the specified sequence:
- Loosen all bolts again by one turn.
- Apply torque wrench VAS 6583 with hexagon key (10 mm) (item 6) to coolant pump. [Note: For ease of handling, apply torque wrench VAS 6583 vertically.]
- Have a second mechanic apply a torque of 30 Nm to coolant pump. [Note: Do not support torque wrench with your other hand.Do not apply excessive force to torque wrench.] — 30 Nm (22 lb-ft)
- While keeping coolant pump under tension, tighten bolts for coolant pump in specified sequence: [Note: Do not reuse coolant.]
- Fill up with coolant .

Who makes these pages, and how
TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
