Removing and installing coolant pipes (top left and bottom left) — AUDI
Removing and installing coolant pipes (top left and bottom left) on Audi: 20 steps, engines AFB, AKN.
This job removes the top-left and bottom-left coolant pipes on the AFB and AKN V6 diesels, listed for platform 8D. The pipes run along the block under the oil filter bracket, so coolant is drained and the oil filter bracket comes off first. Then the coolant hoses are removed, the expansion tank is unbolted and detached after unplugging the coolant shortage indicator switch F66, a cable tie at the heat shield is cut and the heat shield unbolted from the intermediate flange. The upper pipe pulls rearwards out of the cylinder block and swings out to the top right, and the lower pipe follows once its hose is off. The seal into the block is what decides it, so the O-ring seat must be clean and smooth.
🧭 Before you start
Drain the coolant, remove the oil filter bracket, coolant hoses and expansion tank with its F66 switch connector. Free the wiring, unbolt the heat shield and disconnect the hoses from the pipes, then pull the upper pipe rearwards out of the block and lift it out, followed by the bottom pipe. On refit, clean and smooth the O-ring seat, lubricate a new O-ring with coolant, slide the pipe into its bore, refit the oil filter bracket and refill with coolant.
Fits: Audi A4 B5 (8D)
- Opens: coolant
- Renewed: self-locking nuts, seals
Don't miss
- Renew self-locking nuts, seals and O-rings on the coolant pipes.
- Clean and smooth the O-ring sealing surface before fitting the pipe.
- Lubricate the O-ring with coolant, not grease, before sliding the pipe into the block.
- Bleed and check the cooling system for leaks after refilling, as general practice.

Who makes these pages, and how
TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
