Removing and installing oil filter bracket: Audi TT Mk1 (AFB, AKE, AKN, ALZ, …)

Step-by-step removing and installing oil filter bracket for the Audi TT Mk1: 34 steps. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.

Removing and installing the oil filter bracket on the Audi TT (platform code 8N) with the long list of four-cylinder engine codes listed below. The bracket sits low at the front of the block, so the job is mostly about clearing a path to it: coolant drained, noise insulation off, poly V-belt slackened with an M8x40 bolt in the tensioner and removed, the tubular cross member out, the power steering pump unbolted and hung on the lock carrier with its hoses still connected, and the secondary air pump removed with its bracket. Only then can the oil pressure switch connector and coolant hoses be released and the bracket unbolted. Mark the belt direction before it comes off and renew the bracket seals.

🧭 Before you start

Open the expansion tank carefully, remove its cover, slacken and remove the poly V-belt and take off the noise insulation. Drain the coolant, remove the cross member and hang the power steering pump aside without opening the hydraulic hoses. Take out the secondary air pump with bracket, unplug the oil pressure switch and the bracket coolant hoses, then unbolt the oil filter bracket. Reassemble with new seals and refill the cooling system.

Fits: Audi TT Mk1 (8N)

  • Opens: coolant
  • Special tools named: V.A.G 1306
  • Renewed: seals

Don't miss

  • Mark the poly V-belt running direction before removal if it is to be refitted.
  • Lock the tensioner with an M8x40 bolt in its bore to release belt tension.
  • Leave the power steering hoses connected; hang the pump on the lock carrier.
  • Renew the oil filter bracket seals.
  • Collect the coolant in a clean container if it is going back in.

📋 Procedure

  1. ⚠ Hot steam/hot coolant may escape when opening expansion tank; cover filler cap with cloth and open carefully. — Open filler cap on coolant expansion tank.
  2. Unscrew bolt (1) and remove cover over coolant expansion tank (arrow). [Note: Mark the rotation direction of poly V-belt with chalk or a felt-tipped pen. If the belt runs in the opposite direction when it is refitted, this can cause breakage.]
  3. To release tension of poly V-belt, screw a bolt M8x40 (arrow) into the bore on tensioning element.
  4. Disconnect secondary air hose at the position marked with an (arrow).
  5. Move air hose at bracket clear.

Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
