Installing sump (top section) - engines with moulded gasket — AUDI

Installing sump (top section) - engines with moulded gasket on Audi: 20 steps, 4 torque figures, engines AFB, AKE, AKN, AYM.

Installing the upper sump section on engines with a moulded gasket, under platform code 4B, covering engines such as AFB, AKE, AKN, AYM, BAU and BDG. The sealing faces are cleaned, a moulded gasket is used again if one came off, and the dipstick guide tube gets a new O-ring and is fed into its hole as the sump goes up. All bolts to the cylinder block go in at 5 Nm in diagonal sequence, then the sump-to-gearbox bolts are tightened to 45 Nm, and only after that are the block bolts brought up to final torque diagonally. The rest is a long rebuild of the front end: oil pump, bottom sump section, subframe, anti-roll bar, gearbox mountings, starter, alternator, compressor, belt, lock carrier and bumper.

🧭 Before you start

Clean the faces, fit a new dipstick tube O-ring and position the upper sump with its moulded gasket. Snug the block bolts to 5 Nm diagonally, tighten the gearbox bolts to 45 Nm, then final-tighten the block bolts diagonally. Refit oil pump, lower sump, subframe, anti-roll bar, mountings, starter, alternator, compressor and belt, then fill oil and coolant and rebuild the front end.

Fits: Audi A6 C5 (4B)

  • Opens: coolant
  • Renewed: o-ring to dipstick guide tube

Don't miss

  • Reuse a moulded gasket if the sump top section originally had one; do not swap to sealant.
  • Fit a new O-ring to the dipstick guide tube and locate the tube as the sump goes up.
  • Block bolts to 5 Nm first, gearbox bolts to 45 Nm, then final-tighten the block bolts diagonally.
  • Fill both engine oil and coolant before the first start.

📋 Procedure

  1. ⚠ It is essential to use a moulded gasket again if sump (top section) was previously fitted with such a gasket. — Clean sealing surfaces before installing sump (top section).
  2. Fit new O-ring to dipstick guide tube.
  3. When positioning sump (top section), insert dipstick guide tube in hole.
  4. Fit sump (top section) and tighten all bolts securing sump (top section) to cylinder block initially to 5 Nm in diagonal sequence. — 5 Nm (3.7 lb-ft)
  5. Tighten bolts securing sump (top section) to gearbox to 45 Nm. — 45 Nm (33 lb-ft)

Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
