Removing air cleaner housing (bottom section): Audi A5 (CABD, CALA, CALB)

Step-by-step removing air cleaner housing (bottom section) for the Audi A5: 21 steps. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.

Removing and refitting the bottom section of the air cleaner housing on the A5 (8T, 2007–2016) with CABD, CALA and CALB engines, usually done alongside a filter change. The air mass meter G70 connector and its turbo-side hose come off, the top section is unbolted and lifted out, and the old element taken out. Where fitted, the vacuum hose and connector at intake manifold change-over valve N335 are disconnected, then the bottom section is freed from its rubber retainers by pressing them in and pulling upwards. With it out, clean salt, leaves and dirt from both halves and check the drain hose, air mass meter and air duct. The two things that bite are a kinked drain hose and a top section that misses its groove and lets in unmetered air.

🧭 Before you start

Disconnect G70 and its hose, remove the top section and filter, detach the N335 hose and connector if fitted, and lift the bottom section out of its retainers. Clean the housing and drain hose, inspect the intake path, refit the bottom section with the drain hose straight down, then seat the top section in its groove before bolting it and reconnecting G70.

Fits: Audi A5 (8T, 2007–2016)

Don't miss

  • Route the water drain hose straight down without kinks.
  • Seat the top section in the bottom section's groove before tightening bolts, or unmetered air gets in.
  • Do not lubricate the housing retainer on refitting.
  • Use a silicone-free lubricant on the intake hose and hose clips matching the originals.
  • On cold-climate cars, check the warm air intake connection is engaged to its markings.

📋 Procedure

  1. Unplug electrical connector (1) at air mass meter G70.
  2. Release hose clip (2) securing air hose (going to turbocharger) and disconnect hose from air mass meter G70.
  3. Remove all bolts (arrows) from air cleaner (top section) and lift out air cleaner (top section).
  4. Take out old filter element.
  5. Disconnect vacuum hose (3) (if fitted) at variable intake manifold change-over valve N335(1).

  1. Release retainer for bottom section of air cleaner housing (press in rubber on left and right side and pull upwards). [Note: The variable intake manifold change-over valve N335 is not installed on certain equipment versions or on vehicles for certain export markets.Do not use lubricant when installing retainer. The bypass flap with variable intake manifold change-over valve N335 are not installed on certain equipment versions or on vehicles for certain export markets]
  2. Disconnect electrical connector at variable intake manifold change-over valve N335 (if fitted).
  3. Carefully take out bottom section of air cleaner housing. [Note: If the air filter element is very dirty or wet, dirt or water could reach the air mass meter G70 and affect the air mass value. This would lead to loss of power, since a smaller injection quantity is calculated.Always use genuine part for air filter element.Use a silicone-free lubricant when installing the intake hose.Secure all hose connections with the correct type of hose clips (same as original equipment): Parts catalogue]
  4. If warm air intake hose is fitted (for countries with cold climates only), make sure that air intake connection has engaged properly (arrows) (pay attention to markings).
  5. Check water drain hose (1) in air cleaner housing (bottom section) for dirt and other obstructions (clean if necessary).
  6. Clean salt residue, dirt and leaves out of air cleaner housing (top and bottom sections); use a vacuum cleaner if necessary.
  7. Check for salt residue, dirt and leaves in air mass meter and air intake hose (engine intake side).
  8. Check for dirt in air duct leading to air filter element.
  9. Re-attach electrical connector at variable intake manifold change-over valve N335 (if fitted).
  10. Re-install bottom section of air cleaner housing. [Note: The water drain hose must be routed straight downwards and must not be kinked.]
  11. Slide vacuum hose (3) (if fitted) back onto connection of variable intake manifold change-over valve N335(1).
  12. Fit the top section of the air cleaner housing carefully on the bottom section, without using force. [Note: Before tightening bolts, make sure that the top section of the air cleaner housing is inserted into the groove on the bottom section (to prevent air leaks).]
  13. Then secure top section of air cleaner housing to bottom section.
  14. Ensure secure fit of air hose at air mass meter G70.
  15. Re-connect electrical connector at air mass meter G70.
  16. The remaining installation steps are carried out in the reverse sequence.

Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
