Removing and installing air cleaner (bottom section) — AUDI

Removing and installing air cleaner (bottom section) on Audi: 20 steps, engines CAGA, CAGB, CAHA, CAHB.

Removing the bottom section of the air cleaner applies to the four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines listed below under platform code 8R, merged from several variants. The job starts at the air mass meter G70: its connector is unplugged and the hose to the turbocharger released, then the air duct and any vacuum hose are removed. The retainer is freed by pressing in the rubber on each side and pulling up, and the whole housing lifts out. While it is off, it pays to clean salt, dirt and leaves from the housing, the water drain hose, the air duct and the G70 side of the intake, since contamination there skews the air mass reading. Refitting depends on seating the top section in its groove and routing the drain hose straight down without a kink.

🧭 Before you start

Unplug G70, release the hose to the turbocharger, remove the air duct and any vacuum hose, free the retainer and disconnect N335 if fitted, then lift out the housing. Clean the housing, drain hose and air path, and check G70 and the intake hose for debris. Refit the bottom section with the drain hose straight down, reconnect N275 and its vacuum hose where fitted, seat the top section in its groove and screw it down, then reconnect the air hose and G70.

Fits: Audi Q5 (8R, 2008–2017)

Don't miss

  • Do not use lubricant on the retainer; use only silicone-free lubricant on the intake hose.
  • Route the water drain hose straight down with no kinks.
  • Seat the top section in the bottom section groove before tightening, or unmetered air gets in.
  • Dirt or water reaching G70 lowers the measured air mass and costs power; clean thoroughly.
  • On cold-climate hot-air intakes, check the connection engages correctly against its markings.

📋 Procedure

  1. Unplug electrical connector (1) at air mass meter G70.
  2. Release hose clip (2) securing air hose (going to turbocharger) and disconnect hose from air mass meter G70.
  3. Remove air duct (3).
  4. Detach vacuum hose (arrow) (if fitted).
  5. Release retainer (4) for bottom section of air cleaner (press in rubber on left and right side and pull upwards). [Note: These components (bypass flap with variable intake manifold change-over valve N335(1)) are not installed on certain equipment versions or on vehicles for certain export markets.Do not use lubricant when installing retainer.]

  1. Disconnect electrical connector at variable intake manifold change-over valve N335 (if fitted).
  2. Carefully take out complete air cleaner housing. [Note: If the air filter element is very dirty or wet, dirt or water could reach the air mass meter G70 and affect the air mass value. This would lead to loss of power, since a smaller injection quantity is calculated.Always use genuine part for air filter element.Use a silicone-free lubricant when installing the intake hose.Secure all hose connections with the correct type of hose clips (same as original equipment) Electronic parts catalogue.]
  3. If hot air intake is fitted (for countries with cold climates only), make sure that air intake connection has engaged properly (arrows) (pay attention to markings).
  4. Check water drain hose (1) in air cleaner (bottom section) for dirt and other obstructions (clean if necessary).
  5. Clean salt residue, dirt and leaves out of air cleaner housing (top and bottom sections); use a vacuum cleaner if necessary.
  6. Check for salt residue, dirt and leaves in air mass meter and air hose (engine intake side).
  7. Check for dirt in air duct leading to air filter element.
  8. Plug electrical connector at air filter bypass flap valve N275 in again (if fitted).
  9. Re-install air cleaner (bottom section). [Note: The water drain hose must be routed straight downwards and must not be kinked.]
  10. Slide vacuum hose (3) (if fitted) back onto connection of air filter bypass flap valve N275(1).
  11. Fit the top section of the air cleaner carefully on the bottom section, without using force. [Note: Before tightening bolts, make sure that top section of air cleaner is inserted into groove on bottom section of air cleaner (to prevent air leaks).]
  12. Then screw top section of air cleaner back onto bottom section.
  13. Ensure secure fit of air hose at air mass meter G70.
  14. Re-connect electrical connector at air mass meter G70.
  15. The remaining installation steps are carried out in the reverse sequence.

Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
